Our working environment could not be more different from your usual setting – where else could you stroll among rare giraffes and tigers on your lunch break

What makes Chester Zoo a great place to work

As the UK’s biggest and best zoo, we have ambitious goals, exciting plans, and there’s always lots going on here. We’re an inclusive and diverse organisation, made up of nearly 500 permanent and 500 seasonal team members.

Each year, we have plenty of exciting seasonal opportunities within our Retail, Operation, Admissions and Food and Beverage teams, to undertake a variety of tasks such as picking stock in our warehouse, stewarding the car parks, working in our gift shops, welcoming guests, or serving food and drinks to our 2 million visitors. No two days will be the same!

The Role

An Admissions Assistant is often the first person our visitors come into contact with at the Zoo; whether that be on the day at our admission lanes and tills, welcoming visitors on the microphone or by answering all incoming enquiries and phone calls pre/post visit. They will also be involved in the sale and delivery of commercial products and services. This role includes working in the evening during Zoo Events such as The Lanterns and Into the Night. You will undertake all tasks within the Admissions department, ensuring all duties are performed effectively and efficiently at all times with the ability to be proactive and use initiative. The role involves some cleaning duties.

The Package

  • Seasonal contract until 3rd September 2023
  • Rate of pay of £10.49 per hour regardless of age
  • Working on a rota basis with a minimum of 8 hours per week including weekends, evenings and bank holidays. Hours will be significantly more during busy periods.
  • Annual leave which accrues based on hours of work
  • Staff pass so you can visit the zoo during your time off, plus complimentary tickets for your friends and family
  • Employee Assistance Programme (EAP)

Our Requirements

  • Passionate about excellent customer service and a strong communicator. This role includes speaking to visitors face to face, on the telephone and using a microphone.
  • Confident, flexible and approachable with a proactive, “can do” attitude.
  • Organised, with a strong understanding of computer systems including Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Experience of EPOS systems, cleaning and hygiene, and cash handling.
  • Comfortable working for long periods on your feet in an outdoor environment.

Although not essential, it would be advantageous if your customer service experience was gained within a sales/customer experience environment, preferably handling customer telephone and email enquiries. An NVQ qualification in customer service/guest care is also desirable.

Flexibility in this role is key, so the successful candidates must be able to work up to 5 days out of 7 every week, which will include weekends, evenings and bank holidays as rostered.
