Transition Bio is an innovative, early-stage biotechnology company with the vision of being the world leader in data-driven discovery, analysis, and modulation of biological condensates. At Transition Bio, multidisciplinary teams with diverse skillsets in molecular biology, biophysics, chemistry, engineering, data science and machine learning work closely together, building first-in-class technology platforms for condensate analysis and high-throughput drug screening. With close affiliation to Cambridge and Harvard universities, our approach is truly original and encompasses a growing collection of novel technologies and methodologies.

Description

We are looking for an outstanding and highly motivated Scientist/Senior Scientist in Protein Biochemistry and Cell Biology to join our team. The Scientist will assume a critical role responsible for the production of condensate-forming proteins that are the cornerstone of our drug-discovery programme. This role will require a high degree of problem-solving capability and innovation to successfully express and purify challenging protein systems from heterologous hosts (insect/mammalian/bacteria). Candidates should demonstrate strong expertise and technical proficiency in molecular biology, protein chromatography methods as well as in molecular and biophysical characterization of proteins.

Scientist will have strong interpersonal skills and leadership qualities, will have demonstrated a successful track-record delivering against challenging commitments, and enjoy working in a truly multi-disciplinary environment. This position will interact closely with colleagues in biomicrofluidics, bioengineering and biotechnology, medicinal chemistry, molecular biology, and computational biology.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and optimize recombinant protein expression and purification strategies for phase separating proteins, including cloning and construct generation
  • Problem solve and innovate to produce proteins in large scales from heterologous expression systems including insect (baculovirus), mammalian, yeast, and bacterial cells
  • Analyze results, troubleshoot technical difficulties, and implement solutions; present results regularly at team meetings
  • Maintain and implement good laboratory practices, including accurate record keeping using electronic laboratory notebook systems
  • Work effectively with a cross-functional team to contribute to the vision, strategy, and tactics of the organization

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Biochemistry (or a similar field) and 1+ years of industry or post-doctoral experience in protein biochemistry, molecular biology or related disciplines
  • A demonstrated ability to design recombinant protein expression and purification strategies using insect (baculovirus), mammalian and bacterial expression systems
  • Strong experience and technical proficiency in protein purification methods, including state-of-the-art FPLC/HPLC approaches
  • Demonstrated experience of standard molecular biology techniques including cell culture, DNA purification, PCR and primer design, cloning techniques, plasmid isolation, and DNA sequencing; proficiency with molecular biology software tools
  • Demonstrated experience in standard protein characterization techniques including gel electrophoresis, UV/VIS, CD, and fluorescence spectroscopy, DLS, MS and other protein analytical, biophysical, and structural techniques
  • Ability to organize, analyze, and deliver information in a concise, accurate, and professional manner; strong written and oral communication skills; excellent data management skills
  • A deep grounding and aptitude in cutting-edge science and a high degree of integrity and team orientation; a can-do motivating attitude

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the design, expression, and purification of phase separating protein systems
  • Extensive experience with insect-cell expression systems is preferred
  • 3+ years of industry or post-doctoral experience in protein biochemistry, molecular biology, or related disciplines
  • Prior experience in therapeutic protein discovery, biochemistry and cell biology research

Preference will be given to candidates with UK Right to Work status
