Job summary

We are looking for a Scientist to work within the Tuberculosis (TB) Unit Surveillance team to support the collection of high-quality data from the National TB surveillance System database, conduct analysis of data and contribute to the regular dissemination of results through scientific reports and publications.

The TB Unit and National TB Surveillance is responsible for conducting, analysing and reporting national surveillance of TB disease in England and supports the devolved administrations in these functions. The unit also works with partners in NHS England to conduct and report on programmatic latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) screening. This work underpins the delivery of the objectives of the national ‘TB Action Plan 2021-26.

We are looking for a capable, highly motivated person with experience of health data analysis using the principles of reproducible analytical pipelines and statistical analysis software packages (e.g. stata or R) to further the development of quality assurance procedures within the TB unit.

Responsibilities section

As a Scientist your main responsibilities will include:

The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties:

  • You will analyse and interpret scientific data on TB surveillance and produce surveillance or other scientific reports in collaboration with senior staff and external collaborators for a range of audiences, ranging from UKHSA decision makers, government policy-makers, the scientific and medical community to the general public.
  • You will work closely with the senior scientist and principal epidemiologist in code-review and the development of reproducible analytical pipeline procedures for data analysis post database extraction.
  • You will work closely with the senior scientist and data manager to support the ongoing development and exploitation of the web-based National TB Surveillance System (NTBS) by leading the management of NTBS front-end user needs including training of users and the development and monitoring of quality assurance and data protection procedures.
  • You will lead on the production and exploitation of geographical analyses of TB surveillance data by utilising centrally resourced population and geographical datasets and procedures available across UKHSA by working with the relevant teams within Data and Analytics.
  • You will support the Senior Scientist in the management of genomic data collected as part of TB surveillance
  • You will answer and specific request for information from public health professionals, scientists, medical practitioners, students and academic institutions relating to TB Surveillance in England.
  • You will participate in TB research projects through the use of the national surveillance data and other source of information on tuberculosis.
  • You will be required to do any other duties commensurate with the grade as specified by the line manager or unit head.

Essential Criteria:

We are looking for an exceptional Scientist

It is important through your application and Statement of Suitability of 800 words that you give evidence and examples of proven experience of each of the following criteria:

Essential

  • First degree in a relevant science subject and relevant work experience
  • Significant experience of data management, data quality assurance procedures, data analysis and presentation using statistical software analysis packages and automating procedures using code (R, stata, python)
  • Clear communicator with excellent writing and presentation skills
  • Able to demonstrate good organizational skills, time management and ability to work with initiative, independence and to plan own work programme
  • Problem solving skills and ability to respond to sudden unexpected demands


Desirable

  • Experience of using project management software such as JIRA for large collaborative projects
  • Experience of working with public health and/or NHS colleagues
  • Experience of GIS mapping using ArcGIS and/or R
  • Good all-round knowledge of infectious diseases, including TB
