Main Roles and Responsibilities:

Your main role is to support the delivery of high quality sessions that improve participation across the school of all pupils. This role will aim to improve attendance at extra-curricular clubs of all pupils and specifically those from disadvantaged backgrounds. This involves both coaching practical sessions as well as creating whole school initiatives to create excitement about participation and raise awareness of physical activity levels.

Duties will include:

  • Provide high quality physical education and sports coaching delivery, during and after school
  • Provide administrative support to PE Coordinator, OSHL deliverers
  • Provide support to Physical Education lessons delivered by school staff and/or external providers
  • Coordinate and oversee OSHL timetable, including providing activities suitable within apprentice’s range of qualifications and experience
  • Support school swimming and external school visits
  • Provide a young, inspirational role model to students
  • Assist with the improvement of staff development within the area of PE and school sport, through team teaching and sharing of good practice where appropriate
  • Improve attitudes to PE, school sport and physical activity by creating whole school/target group initiatives (not necessarily physically active)
  • Monitor and maintain PE and School Sport Resources
  • Provide general PE and School Sport support to the teaching and support staff, including the PE Coordinator as directed
  • Provide Teaching Assistant support in the classroom, if required
  • To complete the necessary work set through studying the PE & School Sport Apprenticeship programme, and attend the weekly training at Pingles Athletics Stadium
  • To undertake any other duties commensurate with the grading of this post
  • To attend continued professional workshops provided by the educational establishment
  • To monitor, record and evaluate the quality of their teaching and learning, as per Teaching Assistant Standards

Desired qualifications

  • A level 2 apprenticeship in Supporting Teaching and learning in PE is also desirable

Future prospects

  • You will gain Level 3 and have the opportunity to apply for sports coaching jobs or Teaching Assistant posts once qualified

Things to consider

  • The PE and School Sport Apprentice will work full time within supporting PE, School Sport and Whole School delivery requirements
  • This involves supporting PE and School Sport sessions during the school day and after school, as well as supporting the overall teaching and learning of all pupils within the school. Apprentices will work towards their Level 3 Advanced apprenticeship in Supporting Learning in Physical Education and School Sport
  • Apprentices will be required to attend centralised training at Pingles Athletics Stadium (Nuneaton) for 1 day per fortnight
  • This is an infant school apprenticeship post, working with children aged 4-7, with a focus on developing early physical skills
  • This role will require you to be flexible, and may include working after school to support fixtures, therefore being able to travel independently is desirable. Some of the teaching will be outdoors
  • You must be willing to undergo an enhanced DBS check

Qualifications required:

  • Minimum A-C/7-4 GCSE (or equivalent) in English and maths
  • Level 2 qualification in sport/PE/activity leadership or equivalent

Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship Standard:

At least 20% of the time will spent in the classroom supporting the class teacher and children within the classroom.

The remainder of the time (other than 1 day per fortnight training) will be spent on PE related activities within the school which may include:

  • Gross/fine motor development
  • Developing physical skills
  • Extra-curricular PE activities
  • Supporting the class teacher in PE lessons
  • Delivering PE sessions – beginning with small groups
  • Gathering and checking PE resources
