Job Purpose
The purpose of this position is to promote, encourage and enhance the visibility, quality and quantity of the research outputs from SCENE at all academic levels through the provision of high quality and high level specialised technical and logistical advice and support.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Provide a range of bespoke and specialist research support, addressing the needs of academic staff and students to provide a high quality research environment.
2. Be responsible for the management of all aspects of technical service provision, including specialist technical support at SCENE.
3. Be a member of the SCENE management committee responsible for ensuring appropriate actions are carried out in line with technical services provision.
4. Provide problem solving support to specialist field research on logistical issues such as study design, sampling techniques and licencing issues.
5. Provide quantitative statistical advice to new research students by providing appropriate specialist advice and input into student work, as appropriate.
6. Provide support for and input into field teaching, including training provision for visiting courses at undergraduate and post-graduate level within own specialisms.
7. Provide study design and logistic advice and support in the execution of the field and lab studies at SCENE, including field assistance.
8. Be responsible for the maintenance and development of the field research facilities at SCENE (the aquarium, animal holding facilities, wet and dry laboratories, field study sites)
9. Provide specialist technical support and advice for regulated research activities (under the Animals Scientific Procedures Act, Wildlife and Countryside Act, etc.).
10. Contribute to development of policies/procedures/work plans, including advising on future resources needs (e.g. equipment, space, etc.).
11. Contribute to the promotion and development of research activity at SCENE in collaboration with the centre director and Research Committee, for example by promotion of research on the web, by hosting researcher visits and presentation at staged events.
12. Be the NACWO (named Animal Care and Welfare Officer) for Home Office licenced premises
13. Contribute to the local supervision of PG students on fieldwork in collaboration with their primary supervisor.
14. Line manage junior technical staff (a Grade 5 technician), including providing supervisory support, feedback on performance, supporting development and acting as escalation point where necessary.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential:
A1. Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9 (Undergraduate Degree, Scottish Vocational Qualification Level 4) in ecology or environmental or equivalent (including professional accreditation with relevant formal training), and/or experience of personal development in a similar role
A2 Proven knowledge through study or previous job experience of quantitative statistics and study design, in field and laboratory studies in ecology and/or environmental sciences.
A3 Full UK driving licence
A4 Knowledge of the application of relevant legislation (e.g. Animals Scientific Procedures Act, Wildlife and Countryside Act, etc.)
Desirable:
B1 A PhD or equivalent research experience in the field of ecology or environmental biology
B2 Trailer towing qualifications
B3 Home Office personal licence training
B4 Home Office Named Animal Care and Welfare Officer (NACWO) training
Skills
Essential:
C1 Evidence of practical field ecology skills
C2 Evidence of study design and data analysis skills
C3 A proven ability to engage successfully with researchers and students from a range of scientific backgrounds
C4 Flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing priorities in a complex research environment
C5 The ability to make practical running repairs to mechanical and electrical field and lab equipment
C6 Good organisational skills and the ability to plan and organise own and others schedule of work weeks and months ahead
C7 Proven analytical and technical scientific problem solving capabilities
C8 Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
C9 Ability to adapt complex technical instructions/guidance to a range of service users
Experience
Essential:
D1 Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post, through relevant work experience in a similar role
D2 Demonstrable experience in terrestrial or aquatic field research
D3 Experience of managing resources in a complex research environment
D4 Experience of providing supervision to research students
Desirable:
E1 Experience of fish and/or bird husbandry
Additional Information
The Scottish Centre for Ecology & the Natural Environment is CMVLS’s field research and residential teaching station on Loch Lomondside. A £7.2M facility improvements have just been completed and this post will play a pivotal role in developing the activities at this site.

Standard Terms and Conditions
Salary will be on the Technical and Specialist Grade, level 7, £36,382 - £40,927 per annum.
New entrants to the University will be required to serve a probationary period of 6 months.
The successful applicant will be eligible to join the University Superannuation Scheme. Further information regarding the scheme is available from the Superannuation Officer, who is also prepared to advise on questions relating to the transfer of Superannuation benefits.
