We are recruiting for an exciting opportunity to join the biological mass spectrometry (MS) capability within the Oncology Bioscience group in Cambridge. As a mass spectrometry research scientist, you will be accountable for delivering robust and high quality proteomics data supporting drug discovery projects across the Oncology portfolio. Working collaboratively with other disciplines across AstraZeneca, you will have the opportunity to really drive projects forward by implementing innovative solutions to address challenging biological questions.



You should hold, or be close to completing, a B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree in the life sciences, analytical chemistry or bioanalysis. Alternatively, you may have a started your career by completing an apprenticeship in a related field within industry. You will need a willingness to become adept executing established proteomic workflows while contributing to the mass spectrometry capability by supporting the implementation of novel analytical methods. A passion for detailed experimental work and delivering data from the laboratory will be important for this role. You will use your scientific judgement, ability to analyse data, lab experience and communication skills to contribute to experimental design and interpretation for either early or late stage drug discovery programmes.

What you’ll do

  • Deliver high quality proteomics data according to the study plan as agreed with capability lead scientist and project team.

  • Build skills to independently operate state-of-the-art liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry instrumentation.

  • Provide interpretation of experimental data, identifying solutions to problems and putting forward plans for further experiments.

  • Communicate experimental data and key findings in a clear and concise manner to project teams.

  • Generate and maintain clear experimental records.

  • Maintain an awareness of current developments in the literature to support projects and bring forward new workflow concepts.

  • Actively drive personal development with the group and independently identify relevant opportunities.




Essential for the role

  • B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree in the life sciences, analytical chemistry or bioanalysis or industry experience through completion of an apprenticeship in a related field.

  • A strong interest in proteomics, chromatography and mass spectrometry.

  • Ability to design and conduct experiments and develop methods.

  • Ability to generate and maintain clear experimental records.

  • Good communication and presentation skills.

  • Positive and collaborative team player with willingness to improve and learn new skills.

  • Passion for experimental work with a desire to pursue a career from the lab .



Desirable for the role

  • Working knowledge of proteomics or a background in mass spectrometry.

  • Familiarity with liquid chromatography systems.

  • Experience of mammalian cell line tissue culture techniques and Western blotting.

  • A knowledge of cancer biology.

  • An understanding of the drug discovery process.
