Research & Development Scientist / Engineer Phoenix Scientific Industries (PSI) Limited designs, manufactures and installs capital equipment for the Advanced Materials industry, ranging from small R&D systems for universities and institutions, through to large scale industrial production units for corporate enterprises across the globe. PSI products and technology span many aspects of the industrial metallurgy sector including gas atomisation, induction heating, chemical vapour deposition, physical vapour deposition, fluidised bed reactors, wire casting, melt spinning, vacuum and pressure systems. Key disciplines include heat transfer, fluid mechanics, chemistry, materials engineering, metallurgy and physics. Our systems are sold throughout the world, requiring design principles that combine high performance and cost-effective innovation with operational simplicity. Global focus on lowering CO2 emissions and the drive for renewable energy is continuously increasing demand for the specialist materials produced using PSI designed and manufactured systems, and we now wish to expand our scientific project team. We are seeking a Research and Development Scientist / Engineer who can clearly demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the global materials industry combined with proven research experience, ideally in a commercially orientated environment. This role within the Company offers the successful candidate the opportunity for continual professional development, occasional international travel, and stimulating applications research work in several key material sectors within a growing global market. Job Specification & Qualifications-PhD in a relevant subject - ideally Material Science or Metallurgy. Chemical Engineering or Physical Chemistry would also be considered.
  • Post PhD work experience, especially in a commercial setting, would be desirable. Recent graduates will also be considered.
  • Job role reportable to Research and Technology Development Manager. Will be a team member of PSI Research and Technology Development department delivering projects, spanning both Government and Corporate funded contracts.
  • Must be seeking a long-term role in a growing Commercial / R&D environment.
  • Includes a mixture of office and “hands on” workshop / laboratory assignments.
  • Represent PSI during conferences, video meetings and overseas exhibitions.
  • The R&D Scientist / Engineer will review academic literature and build a fundamental understanding of novel processes and materials. This knowledge will be applied during the design, building, installation and testing of new equipment working closely with PSI engineering and production personnel. Material / Process data will be compiled and critically analysed to ensure optimum performance and cost benefit. Process models will be generated and the R&D Scientist / Engineer is expected to become a subject matter expert on emerging technology areas.
  • May be required at times to provided support to other business functions (engineering, sales and purchasing) on specialist subjects.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills to facilitate close working relationships with customers, suppliers, subcontractors, funding bodies, consortium partners and PSI personnel.
  • Demonstrable ability to work consistently under times of pressure. Must be comfortable with handling uncertainty inherent in R&D activity and flexible when work tasks change or develop rapidly.
  • A self-motivated personality, with the drive to achieve excellence in all activities undertaken.
  • The role may also include other tasks and duties that may be required as directed by the Research and Technology Development Manager. The role is based at PSI’s Hailsham site but may involve occasional UK travel and short overseas visits in support of our worldwide customer base. Due to the nature of the work this role cannot be fulfilled by working on a remote basis. Essentials: Full UK Driving Licence and ability to travel globally as required Working
    Hours: 08:30 to 17:00 - Monday to Friday 60min lunch break - 12:30- 13:30 Holiday entitlement: Year 1 = 20 days / Year 2 onwards = 25 days (Plus, Bank holidays)
