Summary

This post co-ordinates the development, delivery and review of safeguarding and child protection policies, procedures and guidance for Schools ( including Academies and Independent).

Specific duties and responsibilities include:


  • Provide advice, support and challenge to schools regarding safeguarding practice, policies and procedures

  • Work with primary & secondary & special schools and colleges to monitor the effectiveness of their safeguarding practice and offer support and challenge as appropriate

  • Ensure that all schools above are clear on and compliant with the minimum expectations regarding safeguarding and child protection procedures, policies and practice.


The postholder does this by using their expert knowledge, sharing that with settings and triangulating that with audit and practice evidence, then following up on deficits directly with settings.

You will:


  • Help coordinate the annual safeguarding audit to inform and provide assurance regarding current safeguarding practice and compliance with national safeguarding requirements to both the Council and SVPP

  • Provide post-audit feedback to individual schools regarding safeguarding in as informed by the audit

  • Write comprehensive reports following the audit including trend analysis and recommendations. This is reported to the SVPP & POB and shared with schools. Findings and recommendations are presented at various forums (SVPP, POB, CSC, School effectiveness groups, HT and governor briefings, Wiltshire Learning Alliance)

  • Undertake visits to individual settings where concerns arise regarding the understanding and implementation of expected safeguarding practice, processes and procedures including the development of an improvement plan

  • Design and deliver regular child protection forums and networking opportunities for designated staff

  • Work closely with the Designated Officer (DOfA) and attend strategy discussions in relation to allegations made against staff and volunteers as required

  • Provide lead professional advice and support as necessary within the investigation process

  • Keep the HOS informed of any emerging safeguarding issues within schools considered to be of high risk in relation to leadership and governance and safeguarding. This requires significant judgement skills to take a measured view of evidence gathered from a number of sources across the Council and any Ofsted views.

  • Maintain relevant data bases relating to safeguarding concerns; allegations; visits; advice and other information as relevant and review at regular intervals. To provide a ‘health check’ of schools as required (i.e. upon Ofsted request)

  • Keep up to date with national and local policy and research on safeguarding and related matters including lessons from SCRs and to disseminate this information to schools providers


Interviews will be held on 15th September 2021.

Where possible interviews are virtual, but due to the nature of this role interviews will be in person. Current public health advice is followed for candidate and employee safety.
