Position Summary

Refractory Operator performs a variety of tasks related to setting up the sand molding process and making sand molds, charging and melting either bronze or aluminum in electric or gas fired furnaces.

Job Responsibilities
  • Makes charge up per specifications and places into crucible. Regulates heating to melt charge at the prescribed temperature and timing cycle. Uses stick type emergent pyrometer to check temperature while charging. Taps out into pouring ladles when instructed.
  • Preheats ladles and crucibles. Checks to ensure the proper metals are poured into the correct mold.
  • Holds ladle for skimming by melt and pourer before pouring into the mold. Avoids excessive rate of pouring or over pouring of the mold.
  • Pouring operations; moves molds into position at the pouring area. Removes molten metal from furnace. Transports metal to the pouring area or to the molds. Pours the molds at the prescribed rate of pouring.
  • Maintains records on pouring sequence and temperatures.
  • Maintains raw material levels and transports into melt room. Operates fork lift or high lift.
  • Regulates mold sequence to ensure proper pouring sequence and facilitates the flow of work.
  • Repairs/rebuilds furnaces, refractory, liners, etc.
  • Selects proper patterns and correct flasks to bring to the molding area. Arranges patterns and gates into the correct flasks allowing enough room for proper metal flow and venting.
  • Places frame/flask on drag section, properly arranges sprues and risers according to pattern specifications and applies parting powder to drag section.
  • Determines the pace of the loop.
  • Pours the sand into the flasks, distributes the sand evenly and levels the sand to the top of the flask.
  • Removes the frame from the flask and hammers through the sand to locate the sprues. Removes cope and blows away excess sand from the patterns.
  • Applies pouring spouts to the mold and writes the pouring sequence on the top of the mold.
  • Removes patterns without disturbing the sand face,
  • Cuts vents in the molds, removes gates and dresses ingates and shaves molds as needed.
  • Cleans molding area and removes excess sand from the conveyor belt; cleans the sand mixers.
  • Monitors sand conditions, chemicals, etc.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
Additional Responsibilities

QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS
  • Associate’s Degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school
  • 4+ years of previous foundry experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Occasional travel either locally, nationally, and/or internationally may be required.
  • Basic degree of proficiency in MS Office Suite, Outlook & Internet applications.
  • Basic analytical, prioritizing, interpersonal, problem-solving, presentation, budgeting, project management (from conception to completion), & planning skills.
  • Basic verbal and written communication skills (including analysis, interpretation, & reasoning).
  • Basic understanding and application of mathematical concepts.
  • Ability to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with peers and colleagues across the organization, as well as, internal and external clients.
  • Ability to work well autonomously and within a team in a fast-paced and deadline-oriented environment.
  • Ability to work with and influence peers and management.
  • Self-motivated with critical attention to detail, deadlines and reporting.
  • Possess a mechanical aptitude; ability to use a large variety of hand tools and basic knowledge of power tools, forklifts, welding equipment, and cutting torch.
  • Ability to work overtime as necessary.

  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, extreme cold & heat, risk of electrical shock, and toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • The noise level in the work environment may be high.
