Lumentum is seeking an Intern/Industrial Placement Student to join an experienced and growing R&D engineering team whereby you will contribute to the development of transmitters, receivers, and modules for optical communications systems.

The Product Engineering Intern position is an opportunity to work in the research and development (R&D) team based in Caswell, Northamptonshire that is passionate about meeting the needs of our customers. We are a Global leader in the design, development and manufacture of innovative optical, photonic and electronic components.

You will help develop the next generation of components (optical, photonic and electronic) , optical sub-assembly (OSA) products. You will be part of a hard-working and diverse team that is continually learning how to improve our products. This team is responsible for the development and improvement of the manufacturing processes and tests used to produce our most highly integrated telecom products. This gives you an excellent opportunity to learn about the broad range of disciplines involved in our product development process (PDP).

In this role, you will
  • Work with R&D engineering team to understand key factors that affect the manufacturing process and tests, yield and performance, and use tools and techniques to develop an experimental plan to study them.
  • Work closely with new product introduction (NPI) and manufacturing teams (from design into manufacture) to introduce the product to manufacture (investigate product issues and improve yield).
  • Analyze data to show the trend of the impact of key parameters, understand the failure mechanisms and generate product yield report in a timely manner.
  • You are encouraged to work cross-functionally to come up with creative ideas for new products, processes, components
  • Receive training prior to beginning your project
Recommended Education

You will have completed a minimum of the first two years of an undergraduate degree or equivalent and be looking to gain valuable experience from the workplace before returning to University to complete your studies. Master’s and PhD students looking for Industrial Placement opportunities are welcome to apply.

You should be studying a technical degree such as: Physics (Optics/Photonics), Electrical/ Electronic/ RF/ Optical Engineering, Communications, or equivalent field and have an interest in the optical communications field.

Knowledge/Skills
  • Most importantly, you will bring a willingness to learn, develop your skills and expand your knowledge
  • Knowledge of optical/electronic/photonic/RF components and their applications
  • Practical measurement techniques/experiments, data correlation and results analysis
  • Ability to perform basic statistical analysis using JMP or other tools
  • Demonstrate that you can work within a team environment
  • Strong interpersonal communications skills will be a great benefit
This Intern/Industrial Placement Student position is for a fixed term of 12 months.

You may have the opportunities to travel to other Lumentum sites, both within the UK and across the globe.
