About the opportunity:

We have a variety of rail projects including a growing and exciting portfolio of major transport programmes across the globe, and this leads to excellent opportunities to get involved in extremely interesting and rewarding commissions. As a result of this growth, we are seeking talented Rail Consultants/Rail Economists at Principal/Associate Director level, with extensive rail sector experience, to join our Strategic Consulting team.

As part of the Jacobs team you will be providing technical, strategic and policy advice to clients, including demand and revenue forecasting, operations planning, performance modelling, due diligence and business case development. We are looking for a proficient and credible individual with previous experience of working on rail delivery projects, an interest in the rail industry and the drive to learn, expand areas of expertise and progress quickly.

Examples of our recent rail advisory work includes:
  • Providing strategic policy advice to DfT and Network Rail on the future of the UK rail industry
  • Leading industry research study looking at the impacts of COVID-19 on rail travel behaviour
  • Development of business cases for High-Speed Rail lines in Sweden and the UAE
  • Programme Partner for East West Rail delivering business and financial planning, engineering and operations support, and programme delivery and management support.
  • Developing business case and transport modelling support to C2E (Crossrail to Ebbsfleet) Partnership on Crossrail extension.
At Jacobs our rail team are provided opportunities to work across markets from road, air and sea transport, energy and its distribution, as well as digital and communication for public and private infrastructure development.
Our core team are based in Jacobs offices in London, Manchester, Birmingham, and Edinburgh, however with multiple Jacobs offices across the UK, we can be flexible about location and provide remote working options to give you a great work life balance. We also open to part-time and flexible work patterns.
Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • A relevant degree (class 2:1 or above, or equivalent) in a numerate discipline e.g. economics, engineering, mathematics, business, operational research or a science; or equivalent professional experience;
  • Proven rail experience and have a good understanding of the structure of the UK Rail Industry (and the various roles of all the key players in the industry) and emerging policy issues such as the Williams-Shapps Review
  • Experience of business case and value for money appraisals in accordance with HM Treasury Green Book, including calculations of wider economic impacts
  • Familiarity with key guidance such as TAG ad the Passenger Demand Forecasting Handbook, including socio-economic factors underlying changes in rail demand
  • Good working knowledge with the rail industry, such as rail operations, timetable planning, public transport fares and ticketing strategies
  • Excellent analytical skills, and advanced user of excel spreadsheets and models;
  • Capable of drafting high quality and insightful reports for public and/or private sector clients;
  • A mindset to constructively challenge the accepted norms and always seek a better way;
  • An ability to work effectively as part of a team and to share ideas and expertise with team members to support ongoing learning and improvement; and,
  • Strong organisational and communication skills.
Ideally, here’s what you’ll also have:
  • Prior experience in one or more of the sectors we operate (experience in multiple sectors or of multiple propositions highly desirable)
  • Relevant post-graduate training and/or qualifications
  • Experience in business development or work winning activities is an advantage.
