Building a sustainable tomorrow

As part of the Midlands Regional Development Programme for National Highways, BAM Nuttall and its integrated supply chain are delivering crucial infrastructure projects under an integrated Framework agreement. The work is worth in the region of half a billion pounds over 4 years and involves highly technical civil engineering schemes that offer fantastic experience and career challenges and opportunities.

The M54 - M6 Link Road project (Staffordshire) is valued at £200M and will involve construction of new link road (1.6 miles) and upgrading of motorway junctions. This will support local economic growth for Telford, Shrewsbury, Wolverhampton, Cannock and Tamworth by improving traffic flow and enhanced east-west and north-south routes. We require a Public Liaison Officer to work on this project as soon as possible.

Your mission
  • Establish and maintain the public relations strategy, including a communications protocol with the client.
  • List and maintain a database of all key stakeholders and interested parties.
  • Keep all stakeholders informed about the scheme and especially any activities that may affect the public.
  • Set up exhibitions, arrange meetings and site visits, produce newsletters, leaflets and signage.
  • Set up and maintain a public helpline to respond to all queries and set up complaints log.
  • Respond to insurance claims from the community and log them.
  • Join the Considerate Constructors Scheme and maintain a top score.
  • Work with local schools, offer safety talks and help with construction related school projects.
  • Give presentations to professional bodies and be able to respond to vigorous questioning.
  • Keep the emergency services and HA informed about any temporary diversions that may affect them including updating the scheme website.
  • Update HA and local authority traffic bulletins as necessary.
  • Ensure that good working relationships are developed and maintained with all neighbours and interested parties by regular liaison with local authorities, local residents groups etc.
  • Identify the main concerns of the public and ensure they are addressed through open dialogue and consult with the local communities to explain and promote the project plans, their benefits and implications together.
  • Minimise disruption during construction, allaying unwarranted fears about delays and provide accurate and timely information.
  • Promote the company and the project.
  • Advise the project staff on public liaison matters.
  • Arrange, supervise, log and administer land and aerial photography and limit the taking of unauthorised photography.
  • Arrange and administer public rights of way on behalf of the client.
  • Have full knowledge of the clients and the companys branding and ensure that articles and imagery are checked and signed off by client before publishing.
  • Carry out other relevant duties as required from time to time.
Who are we looking for?
  • Good interpersonal and oral communicator who can handle criticism and use a sympathetic, diplomatic and empathic style when presenting a scheme or project to the public.
  • A good / sound knowledge of engineering, Government [EA] and Local Government departments [RoW], requirements and procedures and how they might affect the public.
  • Good written, PowerPoint and graphic design skills in order to create newsletters and project presentations.
