The Canterbury Journey project - a £24.7 million heritage lottery funded project that spanned 6 years and was completed in October 2022 - has radically transformed the accessibility and sustainability of an iconic building which embodies England’s story. The project has helped to safeguard Canterbury Cathedral by working to increase the number of those making a journey to it, broadening the range of those who do so, and enriching the experience for all.One of The Journey’s primary aims was to increase the Cathedral’s engagement with a significantly wider range of people, especially those it did not reach for a number of reasons; both cultural and financial. Much of the feedback from visitors was that while the Cathedral is an iconic building steeped in history it often lacked the capability to truly engage with a wide range of visitors who have many differing motives for coming. For over a thousand years the Cathedral has prided itself on providing a warm welcome to visitors but it was clear that this welcome must now be extended to focus on providing an experience that engages visitors and resonates with them. This will encourage future return visits as well as driving advocacy with friends and family. Now that The Journey has ended, the role of the Visitor Experience Officer will be central in building on the positive work delivered over the past six years to cement the Cathedral’s reputation as a truly outstanding and engaging destination that has something available for all throughout the year. The Visitor Experience Officer will work to:-
  • Contribute to and supporting delivery of an annual events and activities strategy, with the aim to raise visitor numbers as well as increasing their engagement and satisfaction levels with the Cathedral.
  • Support the delivery of a calendar of events and activities that will attract increased numbers of the Cathedral’s core visitor audiences (families, tourists, couples, and groups).
  • Ensure that the interpretation both in the Precincts and the Cathedral provides interesting and relevant information for a wide audience to engage with.
We are seeking creative, open-minded candidates with strategic thinking, who can develop new and engaging activities and events; who have an appreciation for the culturally as socially diverse nature of community and who have some understanding of the issues and initiatives affecting places of worship, heritage sites and museums. If you have what it takes to assist the Cathedral with its goal of forming stronger and more meaningful bonds with its visitors, then we would love to hear from you! This post is offered on a 2 year fixed termed basis. As applications are received, interviews may take place prior to the advertised closing date.We reserve the right to close this advertisement early if we receive a high volume of suitable applications. We welcome applications from underrepresented groups.
