Creative Arts Department

The Post

Thank you for your interest in the position of Teacher of Art and Photography. This is an opportunity to join an outstanding department at Ivybridge Community College. We need to cover a maternity leave for the next academic year (fixed term, one year) and therefore require:

  • Someone with good academic qualifications, who is well experienced with strong technical/ practical skills, and broad contextual knowledge. It would be essential to be able to effectively teach multidisciplinary Art at Key Stage 3 and4, Photography; digital and darkroom, at Key Stage

4 and 5.

  • Applicants should have the flexibility, energy and organisational ability to accommodate a range of often open-ended projects and is prepared to make a commitment to the department and the College in terms of hard work and enthusiasm.
  • Any experience of leading a subject discipline and/or supporting development of colleagues would be advantageous.

The Department and Facilities

The successful candidate will join a lively, committed and hard working department. We are very successful classroom practitioners who work well as a team, but offer individual and varied teaching styles. All colleagues take on responsibilities within the department, supporting curriculum development such as reviewing and updating Schemes of Work; supporting Initial Teacher Training or providing targeted support for students. We would welcome participation in our ample extra-curricular activites. Every member of staff is committed to helping students achieve the very best that they can and this is reflected in our results. In 2022 over 94% of our students achieved band 9-5 GCSE Art and

Photography. At A Level, exam results are outstanding with 100% of students achieving A*- C in Fine

Art and Photography. Whilst we are proud of our successes, we are always looking forward and very much enjoy new challenges that bring new opportunities. In short, this is an excellent place to teach and further your career. Ivybridge Community College has a very well-established Creative Arts

Department, accommodated in an extensive suite of seven purpose-designed classrooms and studios, including screen printing facilities, a darkroom, photography studio, an ICT suite and a studio for the exclusive use of A Level students. Most of the facilities are used by all Key Stage 3 students on a termly basis.

The Courses

At Key Stage 3 we focus on the acquisition and mastery of practical and thinking skills and encourage independent learning; the subject matter is diverse. Years 7 and 8 are taught in mixed ability groups and study Art for one hour per week. Students keep the same teachers over the course of each year to provide them with continuity. Many opt for GCSE (AQA) Art and Design, GCSE Photography or

GCSE Textiles. A Level students follow specifications in Art, Craft and Design, Photography and Textiles.

Many students continue their studies to A Level. The work in these examination classes tends to be individual, varied and often ambitious. Common start points lead to a diversity of outcomes, and the teaching is geared towards developing technical competence and providing an understanding of the creative and intellectual processes that govern expressive, artistic activity. Contextual opportunities are created through visits to the major

London Galleries, The Eden Project and The Tate, St Ives.

Extra-curricular

The Department offers a variety of extra-curricular activities. These include: organising trips and visiting artists, supporting College productions, exhibitions of student work, clubs at all Key Stages and study support sessions. We are always looking for new opportunities for our students and welcome further ideas and expertise in other extra-curricular areas.

Staffing

The Department is staffed by a close-knit group of six teachers and two departmental technicians. The atmosphere is good-humoured and welcoming. Each teacher is a practitioner in their specialist field and brings considerable enthusiasm for the subject to their teaching and, as a consequence, to the ethos of the Department.
