Job description

The Manchester College has many Campus across Greater Manchester, each with its own specialist cutting-edge facilities within a friendly and supportive environment. We are the largest Further Education College in the UK providing education and training to a wide range of learners.

We have an exciting opportunity to join us as a Student Mentor on a fixed term (12 months), full time (37 hours per week) basis.

Working within the English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Department you will be responsible for providing tailored support for a cohort of students with challenging and complex needs. The ESOL Department has a large caseload of Looked After Young People and Care Leavers with a refugee or asylum seeker background so this role will require excellent communication skills in order to ensure students are supported and their needs whilst are met.

As a Student Mentor working with the ESOL Department, you will be responsible for working with the most at risk students to remove their barriers to learning. This will involve effectively working alongside foster carers, social workers, leaving care and key workers.

Many of the students enrolled on this course are new to education and need time to adjust to new ways of learning. This role requires patience and resilience in order to empower students to take ownership of their own education.

We are looking for a candidate who values the importance of equality and who students can aspire towards.

To do this successfully you’ll need:

Level 2 qualifications in English and Mathematics or equivalent.

Qualified to at least level 4 in Mentoring, Youth Work, Counselling or Advice & Guidance.

Have experience of supporting learners in an educational setting, preferably Further Education and Higher Education.

Have experience working with 16+ students

Have experience in providing support for academic and personal, social and health development

Ability to communicate in Arabic or Kurdish would be an advantage

The Manchester College is an equal opportunities employer welcoming applications from all sections of the community. We have also recently been awarded the Investors in Diversity award.

If you feel you could make a difference in this rewarding and growing sector

All applicants must demonstrate in their application their ability to meet the Key Responsibilities, Key Result Areas and Qualifications/Skills/Experience detailed within the job description for shortlisting purposes.
Salaries are based on skills, qualifications and experience. All salaries are subject to job evaluation.
