Overall purpose of the job:
The Specialist role is responsible for business-getting at the core level, to provide objective expertise, develop client relationships and execute against the sale curation and department strategies. The role requires subject matter and market expertise in the art category. Secondly, this candidate will be tasked as a Business getter for auction and private sales, building the pipeline of business for the region by deepening short & long term relationships with key collectors, heirs and trade clients.

Major Responsibilities/tasks:
(Duties include but are not limited to the following):

  • Business-getting, for all Modern British Sales, as well as Private Sales. Business-getting is defined as encompassing all of the following; direct interaction with clients, researching the works, providing background on the client, the condition and provenance of the work to the heads of sale, co-ordinating pricing, discussing terms of sale with Business Manager, writing proposal documents, liaising with Proposals team.
  • Closing profitable deals, demonstrating commercial awareness to contribute to overall profitability of the sales.
  • Generation of short and long term pipeline business.
  • Attending client engagement events and acting as a brand ambassador for Christie’s.
  • Pricing works for sale, attending pricing, condition reporting and hilling sessions.
  • Executing appraisals – liaising with Estates, Appraisals & Valuations and other specialists
  • Contributing to writing essays for catalogue entries.
  • Assisting heads of sale with screening and catalogue production.
  • Assisting heads of sale with preview preparations and set-up.
  • Working with and building relationships with the wider Impressionist & Modern Art cluster and Christie’s representatives in other locations.
  • Other duties as assigned by Manager.
  • Annual targets will be allocated for auction and private sales.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Business-getting, negotiating and deal making experience (minimum 2 years).
  • Deep knowledge of the category with a market presence (5 years minimum).
  • Strong commercial awareness skills.
  • Existing client base with ability to grow.
  • In depth appreciation of the International Markets, competitors, collections and with a view and perspective on future growth opportunities.
  • Proactive and collegiate approach to work.
  • Bachelor’s degree in art history, modern & contemporary art category preferred, or equivalent work experience.
  • Knowledge of E-mail, Spreadsheet, Word Processing and Presentation software (Microsoft Office preferred).
  • Ability to learn Christie’s systems including JDE, COS, intranet and website.
  • Strong typing skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including superior written and spoken communication.
  • Superior client service skills.
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and prioritise.
  • Strong follow-up skills with attention to detail.
