We are looking for a talented and motivated individual to join our growing Carbon team as a Principal or Senior Carbon Consultant. Having twice won New Civil Engineer’s Low Carbon Leader award, Sweco’s Carbon team help our clients to select the most cost-effective carbon reduction opportunities to support them in the transition to a net zero economy. Working across the built environment, from early concept stage through to construction, we integrate industry leading carbon management principles within design and procurement processes to go beyond carbon accounting and provide practical carbon/cost consultancy. Working within Sweco’s Energy, Water and Environment Division, reporting to the Carbon Team Lead, you will be responsible for the design, implementation and management of carbon reduction and sustainability services on projects across the built environment, and support clients in developing and implementing carbon management strategies. You will be responsible for supporting business development, managing projects and training/supporting the team build their skills and capabilities.

You will be an integral part of the Sweco Carbon Team influencing and contributing towards our sustainability strategy, seeking new opportunities and helping to develop this business area, e.g. through writing costed proposals, helping to keep Sweco at the forefront of the low-carbon sector, being a conduit for wider sustainability services and be a (not “the”) principal point of contact for some clients.

In this role you will be responsible for:

  • Project management, ensuring tasks are carried out and completed in accordance with the agreed scope of works, timescales and budgets
  • Building and maintaining client relationships
  • Business development, supporting opportunities to build our services and engaging with clients across sectors to promote our carbon services
  • Supporting and undertaking detailed embodied and whole life carbon assessments on a range of infrastructure and buildings projects
  • Producing technical design deliverables (calculations, drawings, assessments, etc) to achieve low carbon solutions
  • Clearly and concisely report results, including contributions to Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Climate chapters
  • Supporting clients with carbon reporting and decarbonisation strategies
  • Engaging with stakeholders, internally and externally, to build knowledge on climate, carbon and net zero.
  • Supporting training and knowledge sharing with junior staff, and working with other Sweco Teams to integrate carbon processes within their disciplines.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Experience delivering carbon management services for a range of project types across the built environment
  • Experience supporting businesses to embed carbon / climate strategies within their organisations.
  • Expert knowledge of climate change science, targets and policy
  • Extensive knowledge of carbon management methodologies and standards such as PAS 2080, RICS Professional Statement for WLC, the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and ISO 14064.
  • Experience producing Climate assessments for Environmental Impact Assessments
  • Understanding of the role of climate change prevention in a wider sustainability context
  • Be able to demonstrate your commitment to carbon reduction
  • Knowledge of climate change adaptation, circular economy, offsetting strategies and low-carbon finances is also desirable.

Professional Membership and Qualifications:

  • Degree and relevant masters in carbon-related subject (preferred)
  • Chartered member of relevant professional institute, or working towards chartership.

  • Able to create content with strong report writing and communication skills
  • Highly numerate with analytical skills, able to use Excel and other similar tools.

  • Good problem solving/contingency planning skills with ability to find quick, innovative and practical solutions
  • Take responsibility for personal development and enable and support the learning of others
  • Project a professional image to clients and colleagues
  • Able to work collaboratively with others to form strong positive working relationships with colleagues, clients and contractors
  • Demonstrate pride in work, through accurate, timely delivery
