Job Description

Nutrient pollution is a significant issue for many of our water bodies, including some of our most precious habitat sites which are significantly impacted by diffuse pollution. We are looking for a motivated individual to support our work on Diffuse Water Pollution Plans (DWPPs). DWPPs are a key document which set out the evidence base for nutrient pollution in Protected Sites that are significantly impacted by diffuse pollution from agriculture as well as other sources.

We have an established programme of work to complete a series of DWPPs by March 2025. The post holder will lead the engagement with technical leads in area teams, based in Integrated Environment Planning (IEP) teams, to ensure that the plans are completed on time and of high quality. Fundamental to this will be to build capability of local specialists by working with national teams who specialise in data, modelling and evidence to ensure the DWPPs are robust. The post holder will also be responsible for developing a communications and engagement plan for DWPPs to raise awareness of their use in reducing nutrient pollution in catchments, at both local and national level. Although most of the work is internally focused, there will be an opportunity to engage with Defra, Natural England, and potentially external stakeholders to report on progress and to influence how the actions in the plans are delivered post March 2025.

Everyone that joins us is required to undertake training and participate in incident response duties when the need to respond arises. Having an incident role is an essential part of working for the Environment Agency and an active way to support communities.

In E&B we promote a positive, inclusive, and supportive culture where everyone feels valued. We use evidence, expertise, and innovation to support delivery, influence policy, legislation and secure resources.

The team

You’ll join our Nutrients and Nature Recovery Team, in the Water leadership area of the Environment and Business (E&B) Directorate. We lead on Diffuse Water Pollution Plans, ‘nutrient neutrality’, Protected Sites Strategies and other strategic water quality work relating to nutrients.

We’re a welcoming, friendly, dispersed team and work with a wide range of technical and policy teams across the organisation. We meet on a regular basis as a team, usually in Birmingham or London.

Experience/skills Required

In your capability-based answers please demonstrate your:

  • ability to work effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures and actively encourage others to consider diversity issues in their work.
  • ability to effectively communicate and engage people.
  • ability to develop and share technical expertise with others in a collaborative way.

  • ability to confidently deal with complex situations by adopting a pragmatic approach to achieve the best outcome.

You’ll have a range of development opportunities and appropriate training will be provided.
