Job Description

Job Title:Development Chemist

Reports to: Laboratory Manager

Based at:Expac (Preston) Ltd based at Units 1 & 2, Tomlinson Road, Leyland, Preston PR25 2DY

Job Purpose:

To research and develop new formulations and manufacturing processes for cosmetics, household and pet care products to meet customer, commercial, manufacturing and defined regulatory requirements.

About you:

It is essential the Development Chemist understands the company’s commercial requirements and manufacturing capabilities and works in an organised, structured and logical approach to deliver new products and formulations meeting the formulation brief and regulatory requirements to the set deadline.

The Development Chemist must be able to work cross functionally with commercial, operations, purchasing and Expac’s customers from initial brief, through the product development process through to first production. The candidate must have a broad experience of formulating, be creative, confident, an excellent communicator and all round team player being able to work with both technical and non-technical colleagues, customers and service providers.

Duties / Areas of Responsibility:

• Maintain an awareness of current trends in formulation, fragrance and new ingredients; use your established network of suppliers and contacts to inform product development.

• Develop new formulations to brief; produce formulations which match stated benchmarks, claims and regulatory requirements either as a new, new formulation or building from Expac’s existing product portfolio.

• Prepare and dispatch of test and trial samples.

• Attend NPD meetings; accountable for updating on workstream actions; managing risks, issues and developing workstream plans with the team.

• Conduct internal and organise external stability, preservative testing, claims substantiation testing and CPSR’s for all development products and maintain appropriate records.

• Support customers with gaining product accreditation applications

• Review alternative raw materials and suppliers for use in existing production.

• Communicate with customers regarding product development and improvement (ie submissions, ingredients, claims).

• Ensure that laboratory housekeeping standards are maintained

• Follow the departments working systems for chemical information, costings, COPTIS, formulation development., customer sampling and stability

• Add and update as required new raw materials and formulation Bill Of Materials to the operations and batch log system

• Liaise with manufacturing in relation to manufacture / scale up of new products and assist with formulation bulk issues when required including efficiency improvements

• Write method of manufacture for bulk products.

• Check Manufacturing Batch Logs when needed

• Carry out COSHH assessments on all chemicals and maintain appropriate records.

• Prepare documents and compile the Product Information File for development products

• Review product artwork for compliance with regulations and claims

• Maintain an awareness of all current and potential regulatory information relating to the manufacture of cosmetics, household and pet care products

• Contribute to and participate in the HACCP team

Key skills:

• Degree in Chemistry or related discipline

• 3+ years of formulation experience with cosmetic products including cold and hot process formulations

• Working knowledge of regulations including EU Cosmetics Directive and awareness of CLP

• Working knowledge to compile product information files

• Able to develop a formulation from a brief to first production following the NPD process

• Able to manage and prioritise delivering projects and work to deadlines

• Able to communicate with technical, non-technical colleagues and customers

• Confident working in a team

• Excellent organizational and time keeping skills
