Brewin Dolphin can trace its beginnings back to 1762 and was one of the founding firms of the London Stock Exchange. The firm is one of the UK’s leading wealth managers, offering a range of personalised investment management services designed to meet diverse and varied individual needs. The firm’s clients are individuals, Charities, Trusts, Institutions and Financial Intermediaries.

Brewin Dolphin is one of the largest Charity investment managers in the UK and Ireland managing c£3.6 billion for more than 1,600 charities. The Charity business is a core business channel for the company and on to which is it highly committed at a senior level. As the 6th largest UK charity investment firm, the company continues to harness its position and is focused upon the further growth and development of the business. The Charity team won the Charity Times’ Investment Management Award 2020.

Through its eight strategically located UK specialist teams, who collectively form a well-co-ordinated UK Charity Group, Brewin Dolphin offers individual portfolios to each charity client. Whilst they are based on a robust set of investment frameworks (six different risk/return profiles) and controls, investment managers have latitude to adapt the asset allocation and stock content to suit each client. Most charity clients have ethical criteria, and the company uses, under licence, the Vigeo EIRIS ethical screening system to assist with this, as well as the work of its own award-winning Research Team.

About This Opportunity

Our Cardiff based charity team has grown its FuM from £144 million to £290 million since 2015. Led by David Myrddin-Evans and Paul Mathias, they are the leading charity investment managers in Wales. Due to the continued growth of the business a Charity Investment Manager is now sought to join the team. The successful candidate will report to Paul Mathias, an Assistant Director in the Cardiff Charity team. They will focus on managing existing discretionary charity investment portfolios together as part of the team. The individual will also be expected to help the team build the pipeline of new business further and will be involved in new business presentations to win new mandates and thereafter play a key role in the on boarding and management of the portfolios, maintaining strong relationships with clients and ensuring their needs are met.

It would be useful if this individual understood both the investment powers and restrictions that may apply in the management of charitable assets and could therefore help with the definition of investment policy.

This is a key role within the business and the successful candidate must be prepared to embed into the team, working closely with David, Paul, and other colleagues within the team.

The successful candidate will be expected to deploy their presentation and client meeting skills regularly, with a view to winning new business mandates at open tender and an individual is sought with demonstrable client skills who is able to cover both the management of charity client portfolios and meeting the needs of charity trustees.

Candidates will be expected to contribute to the team, working closely with fellow investment managers, support staff and the business development team. They must be self-starters with evidence of a collaborative style and have sufficient gravitas to quickly achieve professional credibility with the other investment managers, trustees and clients.

Candidates should be comfortable presenting to larger groups and audiences at trustee training seminars. They should also have strong written skills, be able to draft market reports and investment outlooks at quarter end, alongside others. A part of the role will involve constructive liaison with other charity teams in regional offices of BD.

Candidates should have a real understanding of managing portfolios against a benchmark and operating within a defined risk framework. They should also understand attribution and the behaviour of different asset classes at different stages of the economic cycle.

Skills/Qualifications/Experience

The ideal candidate will possess a good knowledge of investments, with several years’ experience of managing client portfolios and preferably have experience of managing charity portfolios, or as a minimum have the interest and propensity to be dedicated to this market sector, Charity, or Private client sector.
