Job description

The opportunity

A British Art & Design School with a 150-year history, Cardiff School of Art & Design (CSAD) is housed in a state-of-the-art building on the Llandaff Campus and is home to students united by ambition and a true passion for creative enquiry. They are artists, designers, makers and thinkers in the fields of architecture, design, fashion, fine art, and a range of craft disciplines. The school is also home to FabLab, the Perceptual Experience Laboratory, Spin-out companies Fovotech and HUG™, and a number of major research and innovation initiatives that cohere around visual perception and user-centred design, linking disciplines from fine art to computer science.

Cardiff School of Art and Design (CSAD) is seeking to recruit tutors to teach short courses in art and design subjects on an occasional or sessional basis as part of its Cardiff Open Art School (COAS) provision. We are particularly interested in offering short courses allied to CSAD’s undergraduate portfolio with a particular interest in (but not limited to) Painting, Printmaking, Ceramics and Pottery, Furniture making, Jewellery and Surface Pattern Design.

COAS courses sometimes provide someone’s first introduction to art and design or welcome those wishing to hone their skills; COAS tutors therefore act as an ambassador for both CSAD and art and design education.

At least twice a year, Tutors will be invited to put in proposals for courses. We may contact some tutors, where we know we have specific demand for courses. Tutors will be contacted in good time should work become available.

Please note, the session fee is inclusive, covering both teaching and associated duties, i.e. the hour of delivery plus the duties associated with that hour of delivery. Courses will only run if minimum booking requirements are met.

  • Design teaching materials and deliver appropriate teaching, accommodating the agreed level of proficiency in the participant group.
  • Supervise such projects as may be contained within the agreed course, for example visits to museums or fieldwork, operating within the University’s Code of Practice.
  • Provide support and/or feedback to participants to encourage progress.
  • Ensure that participants have an opportunity to provide feedback on the quality of the course delivered and whether their expectations were met.
  • COAS Tutors act within CSAD’s Health and Safety policies, observing all agreed protocols.
