The Ministry of Defence (MOD) is a central government department with a mission to protect our country and provide the ultimate guarantee of its security and independence, as well as helping to protect its values and interests abroad.

You will:


Be responsible for controlling and managing the ‘Discovery’ workstream and the outcomes necessary to support wider project funding. There is also a requirement to support the approvals workstream, in related project activity. The PM will manage the day to day delivery and recording of validated information, supplied by third party MoD business partners, which will contribute to the production of artefacts required to gain funding approvals to move the Project from the Concept phase to the Assessment stage.


  • Determine and utilise the most cost effective contract vehicle available, from existing MoD contracts/frameworks to undertake site discovery work.
  • Determine and enact the optimum method of ceasing the information infrastructures no longer required by Users, taking into account the varying security sensitivities in cessation.
  • Liaise with MoD stakeholders, affected by the wider programme, to determine the optimum vehicle to share and maintain the information Discovered.
  • Contracting for a Discovery partner, to discover many infrastructures within the UK, utilising currently available MoD contract vehicles.
  • Day to day liaison and management of the Discovery delivery partner.
  • Work with MoD Stakeholders to facilitate access to MoD sites for the Discovery partner where necessary.
  • Collate and record data provided by the Discovery partner and facilitate controlled sharing of that information within MoD, where necessary.
  • Identify the Infrastructures that no longer have a User requirement and ensuring they can be ceased in a controlled manner.
  • Attend planned and ad hoc meetings on behalf of the Project Lead, where necessary.
  • Assist the Lead in Project related project management activity, where necessary.
  • Maintain records of, report on and escalate as appropriate any items that may have an impact on the workstream or the project to include but not be limited to: Risks/Issues/Dependencies/Opportunities/Assumptions

Essential skills and experience

  • The ability to lead a project workstream in a competent and professional manner.
  • The ability to form effective working relationships with diverse groups of Stakeholders, which will benefit the project objectives.
  • The skilful application of standard Project Management Tools and Techniques to deliver project work packages and products in a controlled manner.
  • Experience of working in a general project delivery/management role.
  • Experience of writing effective business cases.
  • Experience of working with different types of contract vehicles and the awareness of Commercial sensitivity within the business environment.


Desirable skills and experience

  • Telecommunications Background
  • Experience of leading project management workstreams within MOD projects.
  • Experience of writing or contributing to CAT C, Initial and Main Gate business cases within DD and Strat command.
  • Experience of working and developing MoD Information Infrastructure.
