Background

The Met Office is a global centre of excellence in weather and climate science, and the United Kingdom’s national weather service. Our weather and climate services serve a wide range of worldwide customers, including governments, businesses and industries, armed forces, and national meteorological and hydrological services. The Met Office is currently embarking on a very significant transformation underpinned by a £1.2bn investment in a new Supercomputer. This investment is at the heart of generating benefit directly for the Met Office and for wider socio-economic benefits for the UK.

The post will focus on ensuring our existing products and services are able to fully exploit the benefits of this investment. Our current architecture, likely many IT companies with a significant legacy, has evolved and whilst once fit for purpose will not deal with the future demands, increasing data volumes and growing expectations of our customers both in the UK and globally. This a key strand to realising the benefits of the Supercomputer investment.

Job Purpose

We are looking for an experienced Programme Manager to lead the significant Production Migration and Disposal workstream, as part of a bigger £100m+ Supercomputer Exploitation Programme. The role will focus on ensuring our products and services can fully exploit our world class science. Through migration of products to our new capabilities, consolidation and rationalisation and retirement; our product portfolio needs to be fit to thrive going forward. The programme will drive process, organisation, governance and technology change – underpinning our future product strategy.

As our Programme Manager (Production Migration and Disposal) , the key duties are:

Programme Management of a significant production migration and disposal workstream, as part of a wider transformation Programme
Ensuring a focus on the delivery of benefits
Challenging and evolving the process, organisation, technology and information capabilities
Developing strategic direction and influencing senior stakeholders
Senior advocate for workstream, including comms and change management aspects

Responsibilities

Essential Criteria

Experienced Programme Manager, with experience of process, technology and business change.
Highly developed influencing and negotiating skills at a senior level within an organisation
Strategic thinker, able to set direction across a number of multi-disciplinary teams
Experience of change management and change management disciplines as we transform
Proven leadership and management skills with an ability to lead, influence and motivate multi-disciplinary teams to deliver exploitable programme outcomes.
Ability to anticipate risks, issues and opportunities throughout delivery, and make suitable recommendations to enable success.

Desirable Qualifications, Skills & Abilities

Experience in the delivery of business and customer facing change
Managing Successful Programmes qualification

As our Programme Manager (Production Migration and Disposal) , the starting salary will be £45150.00 with opportunities to progress to £49890.00 over time. New joiners to the Met Office will start on the salary band minima.

Our total reward package is potentially worth up to £63611 per annum, which includes basic salary, potential corporate bonus, employer pension contributions.
