The Role

The Engineering Department is located within the Processing Centre in South Yorkshire. The work undertaken by the Processing Centre supports all aspects of delivery and involves internal and external communication via telephone and email, therefore excellent communication skills are important.

The Engineering Department work on a cycle of events which overlap during the year.

During busy periods, the post holder will be expected to work shifts which may be day or night and could also include weekends or extended hours. The nature of the work undertaken is public facing and of a sensitive nature so the post holder will need to demonstrate a professional and commercial attitude towards work when communicating with internal and external customers.

A day in the life of a Systems Engineer

During the off-peak periods

8.00 Start – On arriving at work I logon to my PC, check emails for updates and any need to know information for the day. Check calendar for any scheduled checks or meetings to ensure my day can be worked around them.

I complete first checks for machinery to ensure they are operating and all safety features are working correctly.

I then have a catchup with the rest of the engineering team to discuss tasks for the day/week that may be of a priority. If there are no priority tasks, I view our task manager software for assigned tasks awaiting completion to organise my activities for the day.

We liaise as a team with other departments to ensure they don’t need help as a priority.

9.00 – I start one of the activities I have assigned myself from the task manager software system which is scheduled conveyor maintenance and replacement of a damaged shaft. This involves preparing the work area with organisation of tools for job, restricting access to area with required signage and barriers, isolating the machinery for safety to prevent use during maintenance. Task requires the removal of damaged parts, assessing damage to identify the cause to prevent future damage. Replace all damaged parts with new and install. Test conveyor to ensure all is working correctly, recommission for operation.

10.00 – I take my morning break, if it is a nice sunny day I may go outside and sit by the pond at our Fretwell Road site. When returning I will prepare for the next task or complete previous task should any unexpected issues arise during the maintenance procedure.

11.00 – Throughout the day I will continue to complete tasks scheduled on our task manager software system. Tasks can range from something as simple as installation of network cabling for PC/machinery relocations to a full machine rebuild as part of scheduled preventative maintenance.

13.00 – I take my lunch break, I usually like to stay at my desk eat my sandwiches and catchup with the latest sports news, but there is an on-site canteen serving hot and cold food and numerous food outlets nearby.

14.00 – If any machinery is in use issues may arise, and reactive maintenance may be necessary. As a team we react to this through our WERMA lighting system that notifies us when there is an issue with a machine through both email notification and flashing lights. I will then visit the machine to assess the issue performing checks, tests, and maintenance to resolve the issue.

15.00 – During the final hour of my shift I will aim to complete any tasks I am working on or get them to a good stop point to continue the following day. If tasks are left incomplete overnight I ensure the area is isolated and restricted for safety.
