About the department

Within the Department of Life Sciences, the epidemiology research group forms a major part of one of the five research themes ‘Diagnostics, Medicines and Patients’. The Prize Fellow will benefit from existing structures to support cross-department collaborations in health data science. The Centre for Mathematics and Algorithms for Data will provide opportunities for the fellow to develop wider links with on-going data science research in the Departments of Mathematical Sciences and Computer Science.

The department has current strong links with several industrial partners (e.g. Pfizer, AstraZeneca, UCB, Eli-Lilly, Janssen, Novartis), with many of these having funded epidemiological projects in recent times. Pharma companies are particularly eager to access epidemiological expertise and ‘real-world’ data to assess disease trajectory and the effectiveness of current therapy and new agents coming to the market. There are also strong links with NHS partners, national and local charities who have funded projects recently, and with national and international consortia that allows access to relevant biobanks and datasets.
