Would you like to play a key role providing mechanical engineering capability across a broad set of challenges to meet the needs of specific projects? We currently have a vacancy for a Principle Mechanical Engineer at our Portsmouth Naval Base site.

As a Principle Mechanical Engineer, you will be will be required to undertake and routinely lead others in activities across the breadth of the engineering lifecycle to support new product development.

This role will provide you with a unique opportunity to join our expanding Innovations Lab team, giving you an exciting opportunity to lead and guide its development of a new product NetZero carbon agenda and gain exposure within the wider BAE Systems.

Your main responsibilities as a Principle Mechanical Engineer will involve:
  • Overseeing design and development of equipment and system technical requirements in response to project briefs and applying these to drive the definition of engineering solutions.
  • Liaising with MOD establishments, test facilities, sub-contractors, suppliers and customers as required to satisfy the needs of a project
  • Defining and leading the delivery of design justification activities for proposed modifications and upgrades to thermomechanical systems
  • Working alongside other engineering disciplines to deliver integrated system solutions. Gathering evidence to demonstrate compliance of these solutions with safety, function and performance requirements
  • Authoring and reviewing design and analysis reports, system and equipment specifications, and supplier statements of work. Assessing supplier responses to technical proposals
  • Establishing relationships with key stakeholders, test facilities, sub-contractors, suppliers and customers as required to satisfy project needs
  • Presenting work to design review panels and key stakeholders
  • Supporting business development teams in defining technical work scopes and authoring bid responses for future Defence engineering opportunities
Essential Skills

Your skills and qualifications:
  • Degree in Mechanical or related engineering domain
  • Chartered engineer, or evidence of recent progression towards CEng / IEng
  • Proven track record in the design definition of mechanical, complex system or thermomechanical systems
  • Knowledge of the systems engineering lifecycle and an ability to apply good systems engineering practices to your work
  • Awareness of mechanical engineering codes and standards, and their application in the design of systems and specification of equipment
Desirable Skills
  • Proven experience in the design of mechanical, turbomachinery, thermomechanical and auxiliary systems
  • Experience of delivering feasibility and concept-level studies for future modifications
  • Awareness of the operational requirements specific to turbomachinery and the design intent of their systems.
  • Familiarity with engineering analysis workflows and processes
  • Experience in the technical leadership of junior engineers across bid and project delivery
