The Principal RAMSS Engineer is responsible for ensuring that the RAMSS (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, Safety and Security) requirements for the respective delivery projects, the candidate is responsible for, within the Project Delivery area of business are successfully executed. This role is responsible for ensuring that the needs of the customer (specifically Network Rail & TfL/LU) are understood and that the RAMSS activities undertaken by specific applications comply with these customer requriemetns. The candidate will work closely with the customer acceptance and approval authorities, Project Delivery and R&D to ensure that these needs are aligned, rationalised and achieved. The Principal RAMSS Engineer will be responsible for the management of this important interface for the assigned projects and will play the role of a technical expert within the customer project RAMSS department.

What are my responsibilities?

  • The Principal RAMSS Engineer, as a member of the Customer Project RAMSS team, contributes to the management and delivery of the customer projects in the area of Specific Application Safety
  • Become involved with projects at the tender, budget, requirements and later phases and ensure that an appropriate definition of the RAMS related requirements is prepared and implemented
  • Play the role of a technical leader and provide advice to the manager and team members on RAMSS related topics
  • Assess and recommend staff level and training requirements to fulfil the activities and provide monitoring and control of the activities throughout the project
  • Ensure all the RAMS activities are completed consistent with the project requirements
  • Have budget responsibility for projects under their control
  • Developing effective strategies to ensure Siemens products, systems and applications are safe and reliable
  • To monitor the system design and implementation and produce Engineering Safety and RAM analysis material that provides sufficient evidence to all concerned such that the developments and changes to Schemes, Configurations, Systems and Products undertaken by Siemens Mobility Limited meet their Project Application Safety and RAM requirements throughout the whole lifetime of that development or change
  • To implement a common and auditable approach in the identification of Safety and RAM requirements, their implementation, and the demonstration of compliance with those requirements
  • Putting together safety/RAM demonstration cases to gain railway authority approval
  • To comply with current best practice, including relevant legislation, standards (e.g. CENELEC 50126/50128/50129, the Common Safety Method (CSM), IEC 61508, and IEC 62443 etc.) and guidelines
  • Understand the risk issues associated with their work and the company’s policy on engineering safety
  • Keep up to date with risk assessment and risk management issues through continuing professional development
  • Effectively communicate relevant information on risk issues to those who need to know (e.g. managers, project leaders, health, safety and environment engineers and colleagues)
  • To liaise with the client and external Assessment/Approval bodies as necessary
  • Provide management, guidance and direction for Junior Staff with the development of RAMS deliverables and provide feedback on their work
  • Report project status and escalate any issues to the Head of Safety Assurance on a timely manner
  • Contribute to the team objectives and provide action plan to achieve the objectives
  • You may be required to allocate engineers from the team to work on projects. This may include engineers in offshore centers. The work will require close liaison with Project Delivery Team from different regional offices in the UK, Project Managers, Engineers and support staff, in relation to performing the RAMSS activities

What do I need to qualify for this job?

  • Degree or equivalent in Electrical/Electronic/Computer Science or related discipline (essential)
  • Working knowledge of ISO9001, CENELEC EN50126, EN50128, EN50129 and their implementation in a safety development environment is required together with an understanding of the application of the quality, safety and V&V techniques applicable to system, hardware and software design and testing (essential)
  • Knowledge of all the phases of the design lifecycle (essential)
  • Experience in chairing Hazard Identification sessions with multidisciplinary teams (essential)
  • Understanding and application experience of safety management and safety engineering processes such as safety planning, hazard analysis, safety requirements capture and safety case development for specific applications (essential)
  • Understanding or application experience of RAM management and RAM engineering processes such as RAM planning, RAM Demo planning, RAM analysis, RAM requirements capture. FRACAS and RAM case development (essential)
  • Understanding of the technical principles of complex ETCS, Control Systems, Interlocking, Train Detection and CBTC system architectures and signalling principles (essential)
  • Experience of producing the following: RAMS plans, Hazard Identification briefs, System Hazard Analysis Reports, Application Safety Cases (structured to CENELEC 50129), RAM demo reports and System Hazard Log Management (essential)
  • Competence in the use of Microsoft Office packages (WORD, EXCEL, POWERPOINT etc) (essential)
  • Previous work experience in the UK rail industry or in any major railway programme with respect to the Engineering Safety/RAM management of complex turnkey mainline or mass transit railway projects
  • Understanding and application experience of verification and validation techniques including an appreciation of signalling principles testing
  • Understanding of systems configured by application data and data preparation tools
  • Understanding of cyber security risk on system safety
  • Experience with CENELEC 50126/50128/50129 and IEC 61508 standards
  • Experience of the application of the EU Common Safety Method (CSM) on Risk Evaluation and Assessment
  • Experience in safety-critical programmable and electronic systems
  • Experience of DOORS Requirements Management Databases
  • Experience of configuration management methods/tools

The Principal RAMSS Engineer must possess personal qualities that enable them to:

  • Maintain and improve technical competence and to undertake tasks only if qualified by training or experience, or after disclosure of pertinent limitations
