Microsoft Research Cambridge (UK) is searching for an exceptional applicant to fill a vacancy on Project Silica. The successful candidate would be a key member of the Project Silica multi-disciplinary team who are developing innovative optical approaches to data storage for the cloud era.

Responsibilities

The Researcher would be responsible for the design, implementation, and testing of femtosecond laser material processing apparatus for the nano-structuring of glasses at unprecedented resolution and throughput.

Microsoft Research Cambridge (UK) is searching for an exceptional applicant to fill a vacancy on Project Silica. The successful candidate would be a key member of the Project Silica multi-disciplinary team who are developing innovative optical approaches to data storage for the cloud era.

The individual will join a highly motivated and capable team based in Microsoft Research Cambridge focused on making glass storage a reality. The Researcher would be responsible for the design, implementation, and testing of femtosecond laser material processing apparatus for the nano-structuring of glasses at unprecedented resolution and throughput. They will get access to our state-of-the-art facilities and resources. We look to individuals who can drive their own cutting-edge agenda, to push the state of the art in glass storage.

• A relevant PhD and at least 5+ years post-doctoral work in the field of data storage in glasses using femtosecond laser material processing.
• Expert understanding of the interaction between femtosecond laser pulses and glasses with extensive experience.
• Experience designing, procuring, constructing, and operating femtosecond laser material processing apparatus (lasers, modulators, positioning systems, etc.).
• Modelling the interaction between femtosecond laser pulses and glasses.
• Familiarity with polarization and phase contrast optical microscopy techniques.
