Principal Engineer, Mechanical

Portishead, Bristol with travel

Competitive plus bonus scheme plus pension

Most great engineers are interested in solving big problems.

In our world, reducing global warming gases and preventing their release into the atmosphere, feels like a pretty big problem to tackle.

The truth is we all rely on refrigerants.

They keep the gym cool as our feet pound the treadmill. Pump cold air into our car on a hot summer day. Chill our drinks whilst we fire up the barbeque.

Whether we like it or not, despite their high global warming potential (GWP), they’re not going away any time soon.

So engineering technology which reduces the demand for the production of high GWP refrigerants feels like a mission we can all get behind.

The question is, can you?

What you’ll love about being a Principal Engineer in our Group Engineering team.

This is a brand-new role in a newly created team. Nobody has sat in this seat before. You’re not coming in to help clear up a mess that someone else has made.

Not everyone aspires to be a people-manager, yet like most people you still want the room and support you need to grow. This role gives you the opportunity to be the technical leader at Group level within the process and mechanical engineering discipline.

You’re joining a team where learning is encouraged. We’re looking to you to produce next-generation iterations of our existing technologies. This means new tools, processes and methodologies are encouraged, not dampened.

You’ll make a real, visible impact. Our business is of a size where you still have the ability to see the direct results of your contributions at regional and group level. You’re not joining a large corporate where your good work gets lost in the layers.

You’ll be joining a fast-growing business, heavily invested in engineering technology, which helps the world combat global warming and climate change.

What you’ll get in return

We offer a competitive salary and a good pension scheme.

Help us achieve company goals and you’ll enjoy an annual bonus of up to 12% of your salary.

It’s important that our team have a positive working experience and can take time out to unwind. So, as well as an internal wellbeing programme and access to a team of trained mental health first aiders, you’ll receive 25 days holiday a year.

COVID-19 permitting, we’ll invite you to annual events during the summer and at Christmas.

You’ll get a paid day off to support a community project or charity of your choice.

You’ll open a door to wider career opportunities across our Global business.

You’ll be joining an award-winning business, crowned as an Amazon ScaleUp business in 2020 and recognised for two consecutive years running as Employer of the Year at the Business Leader Awards.

Who you are

You’re an experienced and qualified engineer with significant depth of technical experience in mechanical engineering.

You see your next step as a role where you can grow and develop as a technical authority, rather than as a people manager.

You feel at home in industrial settings. Chemical, operational or processing environments are where you’ve built your experience to date.

You’ve managed multiple types of engineering projects and have developed a good sense of what it takes to truly deliver projects on time and to budget. Your organisational and planning skills are exemplary.

You’ve got an excellent knowledge and breadth of experience in engineering standards such as EN13445, PD5500, IEC60079, API520/521 machinery directive, ADR regulations, international variations thereof.

You have well-rounded interpersonal skills and find it quite natural to bring people around to your way of thinking. It goes without saying that your English language (verbal and written) skills are excellent.
