Our Integrated Combat Systems Business

Integrated Combat Systems is part of BAE Systems Submarines. We predominantly supply to the UK MoD but with smaller derivative work done in support of international Customers. Our team is responsible for system design, build and/or procurement of the major electronic and mechanical systems on a submarine, as well as provision of test, integration and support services.

Innovation is central to our DNA and has produced the Common Combat System (CCS) to address the customer’s affordability, technology and capability challenges. It is based on commercial off-the-shelf technology (COTS) coupled with bespoke military hardware and software and is being progressively rolled-out into the UK’s Submarine flotilla.

We effectively incorporate rapidly evolving, commercial technology, new capabilities and changes coming from the operational environment into long-term build, maintenance and in-service programmes.

As a ’system of systems’ integrator we work closely with our Customer, partners and suppliers to develop and provide innovative, intelligent and value for money solutions across all classes of UK Submarine both in build and in service with the Royal Navy, ensuring our submariners always have world-class, safe, capable and available products.

Principal Engineer - Systems Engineering (CCSv4.1 & 4.2 Product Owner)

Would you like to play a crucial role in supporting the development of our cutting-edge submarine programmes? We currently have a vacancy for a Principal Engineer - Systems Engineering at our sites in Filton, Weymouth, Frimley, or Portsmouth.

As Principal Engineer – Systems Engineering (CCSv4.1 & 4.2 Product Owner) you will be working within the Common Combat System Team where you’ll play a key role in the delivery of the update to the systems architecture and platform infrastructure equipment on which the combat systems for the UK Submarine Flotilla are built.

The Astute Class Combat System Product Owner role is based on the traditional Agile Scrum Product Owner Role with a particular emphasis of providing technical leadership to the systems engineering team. The Product Owner represents the interest of the Astute Class Combat System Technical Authority, the business, and MOD Customer stakeholders, ensuring the systems engineering team consistently deliver increments (Sprints) via Agile Scrum that maximise the value of the Astute Combat System through delivery of designs task features that align with the Product Roadmap goals.

The Product Owner clearly articulates the desired outcomes of each Sprint to the team to deliver features in alignment with the Programme needs.

This role will provide you with the opportunity to partake in engineering activities that help us support our submarines that play a critical role in our nation’s defence. This role could also lead to future opportunities either within the team or wider BAE Systems Business.

Your main responsibilities as a Principal Engineer - Systems Engineering (CCSv4.1 & 4.2 Product Owner) will involve:
  • Responsibility for leading and influencing the design and development of technology re-fresh upgrades for the Astute Class Combat System sub-system equipment through coordination of activities in accordance with Systems Engineering processes, tools, and techniques across work packages (e.g., requirements and acceptance management, model-based systems engineering, Platform physical implementation, and Integration, Test, Evaluation and Acceptance)
  • Reviewing and influencing the technical requirements and architectural design for allocation and realisation of systems, sub-systems, and specialist domains (safety/security/ILS/ human factors engineering) to ensure the logical and systematic conversion to a complete, coherent, and integrated set of equipment level requirements and designs to allow sub-contract design, development, qualification, and acceptance
  • Effective Product Backlog management, which includes: Developing and explicitly communicating the Product Goal, Creating, and clearly communicating Product Backlog items, Ordering Product Backlog items; and, ensuring that the Product Backlog is transparent, visible, and understood
  • Presentation of acceptance evidence at design reviews to senior and external stakeholders. Articulating a clear understanding of the technical risks associated with the area of responsibility at the review panels
  • Supporting the Engineering Manager with maturity management planning, delivery of programme level design reviews, including stakeholder coordination, design baseline and voids management. Overseeing and input to the change management process and controlling project scope
  • Understand, coordinate, and align specialist domain (safety/security/ILS/ human factors engineering) processes etc. with the Systems engineering and design review process
  • Management of coherence between architecture, systems, and equipment level design activities
  • Coordination and management legislative processes for system, sub-system and equipment design against legislation and standards
  • Delivery of submarine class combat system, system, subsystem, and equipment designs, with technical background in at least one or more of vessel Combat System subsystems including Command & Control (C2), Above Water Surveillance (AWS), Underwater Surveillance (UWS), Serial to Ethernet Interface Conversion, Computing & IT Infrastructure Architecture, and Navigation
Your Skills And Qualifications
  • Systems requirements understanding, including experience with tools and techniques such as IBM DOORS, SpParx Enteprise Architect, etc.
  • Demonstrable experience in the specification, design, and development of complex systems, aligned to ISO-15288 (via Waterfall / V-Model engineering lifecycle frameworks)
  • Knowledge of the system engineering lifecycle including delivery and be able to apply good systems engineering practices to your work
  • Agile Product Owner certification or skills such as: Backlog Management, Ensuring the Backlog is always an accurate reflection of the work to be done, Backlog items are well understood by the team, Tickets are built in advance of sprint planning, Technical Leadership - while not necessarily purely part of the pure scrum role, the Product Owner is required to provide direction setting and quality assurance of team outputs, Ensuring the various pieces of work can fit together to provide a coherent output, Guiding the shape of functional model and requirements development, Project Coordination, Communication and support to Scrum Masters in ensuring that dependencies and project performance can be managed
  • Use of Atlassian Jira & Confluence toolsets
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Understanding of relevant engineering standards, including safety and environmental regulations
