Mechanical Engineering Team Lead

Would you like to play a key role in managing our design team within the Auxiliary Systems discipline? We currently have a vacancy for a Mechanical Engineering Team Lead at our sites in Scotstoun or Filton.

As a Mechanical Engineering Team Lead, you will apply your depth of specialist design knowledge in mechanical aspects of all Auxiliary Systems to resolve complex specialist design problems and issues, assisting with the development of auxiliary systems, providing design input to the subcontractor and assurance that the architecture and detailed design are fit for purpose, ensuring technical viability and safe operation of all auxiliary systems.

This role will provide you with the opportunity of working on one of the world’s cutting-edge surface ships using the most advanced processes of ship design within a global team with the flexibility of working early shifts to allow you to liaise with our global teams.

Your main responsibilities as a Mechanical Engineering Team Lead will involve:
  • Developing and progressing the design of complex engineering on Hunter class frigate
  • Managing a team of 7 people to complete complex engineering work scope in the UK, feeding into the wider global programme
  • Resolving and working to a resolution with the team on complex technical issues – mechanical, design queries and issues
  • Acting as main point of contact with customers and/or suppliers in assigned areas on engineering matters, to resolve complex problems and issues and to maintain awareness in both parties of priorities and objectives
  • Carrying out relatively complex technical analyses and investigations, including evaluation and selection of technical options, and prepare reports with suggested recommendations to support the resolution of problems and the improvement of engineering capability
  • Developing the team through the L&D and performance management process, identifying training and development requirements and skill gaps
  • Making engineering decisions within own sphere of responsibility and delegated authority
Essential Skills

Your skills and qualifications:
  • Degree qualified in a Mechanical Engineering related discipline
  • Chartership or full commitment to work towards it
  • Experience in complex system design (auxiliary, piping systems etc.)
  • Experience working with Fluid systems
  • Wide range of Auxiliary system design knowledge such as:
  • Fluid system design including flow modelling, flow calculations, use of pipes and valves
  • Hydraulics and compressed gas systems.
  • Petroleum, Oils and Lubricants (POL).
  • Water Systems, including Chilled Water.
  • Waste Management Systems
  • Bilge, Sullage and Ballast Systems, Scuppers, drains, vent and air escape systems.
Desirable Skills
  • Experience in the design, build, integration, support and operation of Naval ships
  • Experience working with International customers or suppliers

You use your initiative to resolve issues with minimal supervision and can juggle several priorities working to within the timescales given. You are outgoing and confident allowing you to manage a cell of work happening in the UK and have the flexibility to feed into a wider global programme.
