The Cyber Incident Response and Investigations Team is part of the Investigations department and is responsible for investigating data protection breach cases where the breach occurred due to a technological failing. The team also responds to significant cyber incidents that occur in large national and international organisations.

In addition to regulating UK GDPR, we are a competent authority for digital services providers under the Network & Information Systems Regulation (NIS). NIS provides legal measures to boost the overall level of security (both cyber and physical resilience) of network and information systems that are critical for the provision of digital services.

Job description

The ICO is seeking to recruit a Principal Cyber Investigations Officer into our Cyber Incident Response and Investigations Team with experience in cyber security and the relevant legislative frameworks of UK GDPR and NIS.

The role involves leading investigations into serious cyber and technology security related contraventions of the UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018 and incidents under the NIS Regulations 2018. You will also work with senior managers and colleagues during the incident response phase of serious incidents, gathering relevant information and identifying any measures required to mitigate on-going risks. You will regularly engage with other UK and international law enforcement and cyber security agencies when managing incidents. You will also be responsible for making recommendations for enforcement action, in line with the ICO’s Regulatory Action Policy.

This is a key role in the Cyber Incident Response and Investigations team, with involvement in a range of complex and high profile cyber related personal data breaches.

Responsibilities

You will have excellent communication skills with the ability to engage with senior stakeholders both internally and externally. We need someone who can prioritise competing issues and tasks and contribute effectively as part of a team often with demanding deadlines. Holding a degree or relevant professional qualification, or with equivalent relevant experience, you will have experience in information and cyber security and data protection, with a good understanding of the relevant legislative requirements and the regulatory remit of the ICO.

You may be required to travel to engagements throughout the UK and, overseas. Therefore, your ability to travel and willingness to work outside of normal office hours is essential.

You will be based at our Wilmslow head office, however the ICO embraces a flexible working policy which will include opportunities for homeworking where suitable.

If you are appointed to work with the ICO you will be required to complete security clearance processes. These include identity and qualification checks and a Basic Disclosure level check of unspent criminal convictions.
