The Opportunity


Leonardo is seeking a Principal Course Designer to translate our customer training and development needs into engaging educational courses. This will include conducting knowledge, skills and attribute (KSA) gap/task analysis, compiling Systems Approach to Training (SAT) relevant documentation, selecting appropriate instructional methods, defining time frames and preparing training materials in physical and digital formats. They will have experience in structuring educational programs and are familiar with both classroom-style, Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) and web-based courses.

They will support the Head of Engineering Projects – Training & Services and Training Lead in the effective design of the assigned customer contracted projects training deliverables and assist in the overall training solution. The post holder will create the design solutions across all Academy courses and be responsible for course maintenance after training evaluation for the Continuous Improvement (CI) of the course structure in accordance with a SAT.

The Principal Course Designer will apply judgement to achieve successful project/programme outcomes, engaging with relevant stakeholders as required, taking into account any governance level objectives. All applicants must be willing to undergo Basic Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Checks and undertake Care of Trainees (CoT) Training.


What you will do


  • Provide ongoing direction and support to staff.
  • Implement the development and delivery of training to staff.
  • Act as the Project Manager for designated Training activities required by the business.
  • Liaise effectively with Internal Departments, Customers and End Users.
  • Development and dissemination of professional standards within the Training environment.
  • Conduct a needs assessment in order to recommend appropriate design solutions and strategies.
  • Use an instructional design and development process appropriate for a given project.
  • Direct and Implement evaluation strategies.
  • Direct and Implement change strategies.
  • Direct and Implement training planning and preparation strategies.
  • Direct and deliver training/education to all levels of target audience.
  • Direct and deliver the assessment of all training/education to confirm assimilation.
  • Apply training business management functions.
  • Apply Leonardo Life Cycle Management Processes throughout the course design.
  • Direct and deliver mentoring/coaching to all instructional staff.
  • Development and dissemination of professional standards within the Training environment.
  • Conduct planning and analysis for training/education courses.
  • Conduct design and development of training courses.
  • Conduct evaluation and implement change to training courses.
  • Plan and prepare for the delivery of training courses.


What we are looking for


You must have:

  • Course Design Qualification (Level 3 NVQ) or a recognised higher or equivalent.
  • A flexible and pragmatic approach.
  • Comprehensive understanding of Electronic Warfare Operational Support or Electronic Warfare.
  • Experience of Mission Data Generation or Mission Data applications.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills.
  • Excellent planning and organisational skills.

It would be nice if you have (any of the following):

  • Train the Trainer (TTT) course (Level 4 NVQ) or a recognised higher or equivalent qualification/course.
  • Recognised Teaching qualification, minimum of AET Level 3.
  • A working knowledge and understanding of the JSP-822 DSAT process or equivalent.
