The Role

KeySkills/Responsibilities: (Included but not limited to):
  • Carry a defined caseload of patients who have a varying range of severity and complexity of psychological issues and psychiatric disorders and provide support to their families and carers, as appropriate.
  • Undertake the assessment, treatment and management of patients referred to the Service with a varying range of severity and complexity of psychological problems and psychiatric disorders. In particular, patients with psychological conditions and psychiatric disorders referred by other health professionals, as specified by the Team/Service Manager and the Service Lead for Psychological Interventions, some of which may be highly specialised. Assessment and intervention to involve families and carers, as appropriate.
  • Provide a psychological service to patients referred from other departments, through identified pathways, as agreed with the Team/Service Manager.
  • Collaboratively evaluate the appropriateness of referrals from a number of sources; referrals to be accepted as resources permit.
  • Carry a caseload of appropriate size, complexity and severity, including patients whose problems may be complicated by biological, social, familiar, environmental and educational factors, physical ill-health or bereavement and may be presented in an aggressive and chaotic manner.
  • Provide psychological therapy, where appropriate, making use of a variety of psychological models, as appropriate, with individuals, couples and/or groups.
  • Provide specialised psychological therapies which require specialist post-qualification experience, supervision and training to acquire the necessary clinical and therapeutic skills and personal resources.
  • Collaborate on direct and indirect clinical casework with Trust staff and staff of other agencies, to enhance the capacity of other professionals to carry out their responsibilities.
  • Collaborate on direct and indirect clinical casework with other psychologists working in other specialities to ensure that gaps in service provision are met.
  • Promote excellent psychological practice by staff in the Team/Service and provide clinical leadership to other professionals who practice psychological approaches and promote a service consistent and compliant with the philosophy of person-centred and evidence based practice.
  • Undertake risk assessments and risk management of individuals presenting with risk of vulnerability, self-harm and/or risk of physical, sexual or emotional harm to others. Provide general advice to other professionals on psychological aspects of risk assessment and management.
  • Provide specialised psychological assessments, including psychometric assessments, which require training and expertise to acquire the necessary dexterity, accuracy and observational skills. Interpret complex psychological data from a variety of sources, including neuropsychological tests, psychometric tests, and self-report measures, rating scales, structured observations and semi-structured interviews with patients, their relatives and others involved in the patients’ care.
In order to apply for a post, youmusthave a Doctorate in Clinical or Counselling Psychology (or equivalent), HCPC registration, eligible for registration with the BPS. Over 4 years’ experience as a qualified practitioner psychologist working in adult mental services (NHS) or equivalent service.
