The role of power systems apprentice is focused on supporting the Power Systems Team with their day-to-day duties in base and on site whilst undertaking a level 2 and 3 programme in engineering discipline at Derby College. On successful completion of the apprenticeship, the role will progress into a full time technician position.

The power systems team design, build, modify and maintain electrical systems in order to provide high quality, reliable and safe power to support the company’s main role providing outside broadcasting facilities to television.

Your role will start off by supporting the power systems team in delivering these through a series of planned and reactive maintenance tasks. It is expected that as you progress through an apprenticeship and into full time employment as a technician within the company, you will be able to take on responsibility for larger and more complex tasks with less supervision.

You’ll be working on a range of high-end broadcast vehicles, ranging from generator trucks (small power stations that provide a private power supply for broadcasting facilities) to scanners (workspaces where a variety of feeds are mixed together before broadcast) and a range of support vehicles.

You’ll also assist with the:

  • design
  • build
  • maintenance of complex electrical systems
  • [CR1]PAT testing, effectively

My aspiration would be to send them on a PAT testing course ASAP in order that any time when there isn’t much going on, they can do some PAT testing [CR2]PAT testing moved upwards.
