Job Description

We are looking for a Payload Systems Engineer to join Airbus Defence & Space in Portsmouth. Y ou will join our Telecom Payload System Engineering team, integrated within our Space Engineering group.

The Telecom Payload System Engineering team is a centre of competence gathering expertise in RF Systems; Electrical Systems; Mechanical & Thermal Systems and EMC. They provide engineering support to the Telecom business line (for payloads flying on Eurostar, OneSat and other third party platforms), R&D activities, proposals and development of advanced payload products.

The team supports payload design and customisation activities, performance analyses of the telecom mission’s payload and supports the Assembly, Integration and Test group (AIT) at Payload level, Spacecraft level and up to the delivery of the satellite to the customer after the completion of In Orbit Tests.

In your role as Systems Engineer, you will support aspects related to the payload (PL) RF, Electrical and EMC subsystems on a given project.

You will be subject to a BPSS check (including a criminal record check).

Tasks and Responsibilities
  • Member of the System Engineering Team assigned to a telecom payload project; the role has a strong focus on RF System performance analysis, but also includes Electrical Systems and EMC
  • Understand and interpret customer requirements
  • Assist in the design processes for a telecom payload (for the initial phase of the project / if applicable)
  • Support the production of detailed equipment specifications; working hand-in-hand with Payload Equipment Specialist and Equipment Technical Authority
  • Analysis of payload system architecture
  • As part of a project team, perform RF analyses of payload performances
  • Take part to the preparation of analysis data with relevant analysis tools
  • Compile written reports or analysis documentation
  • Review inputs prepared by the RF System team for the reviews with the customer
  • Presentation of analysis data to the customer (in the context of customers’ gate reviews: PDR; BDR; CDR; etc.)
  • Support the test campaigns and the analysis of test results, working hand-in-hand with the Assembly, Integration and Test operations team (working in clean room environment)
  • Lead investigation of technical issues or problems
  • Provide support to other groups such as the Mechanical Design Office, Purchasing, equipment suppliers and Assembly and Integration Test teams.
  • Support customer and supplier design/test review meetings (in support of the ‘Justify design and build’ process)

Role

The focus of the role is the delivery of a given project (telecom payload); but during some phases of the projects, it might be possible to take part to other activities, such as
  • Support to proposals
  • Contributing to innovative Research & Development programmes
  • Support / lead technical payload bid activities
You will spend short periods of time, as required, working at the Toulouse Airbus Defence and Space site and possibly on customers’ sites.

Required Skills And Experience
  • The position is open as a direct entry option for graduates i.e. no previous experience is necessary
  • Alternatively, experience in the field of Payload System Engineering, being for design or test activities is desirable
  • A strong motivation for systems engineering in the space industry is a must
