Summary of Role:
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join a growing business as the first UK based IP legal lead. The successful candidate will help set and implement an IP strategy working closely with other members of our Legal and Compliance team; engineers and global IP team.

We have set ourselves a goal to double our business within 5 years including through the development and exploitation of more indigenous IP capability. As part of this goal we are looking to invest in specialist expertise to work with the business to shape, implement and drive an IP strategy.

The role of Patent Counsel reports into the RUK Legal leadership with a dotted line to Engineering. The successful candidate will join the global IP team who provide support, expertise and leadership on company-wide IP policies and practices.

This role would be suitable for an individual looking to take on responsibility as an IP leader and implement their experience in an exciting technology environment whilst maintaining the ability to work flexibly and autonomously. Our Legal team support our colleagues across our UK sites and within our Canadian business; this presents the opportunity to be based from any of our office locations or from home (as preferred by the candidate) with some travel required to sites to support in person training and invention disclosure workshops.

Main Duties/Objectives:
Devise RUK IP strategy encompassing IP development, protection and exploitation
Engage key stakeholders across UK, Canadian and US businesses to roll out RUK IP strategy
Working with engineers to identify patentable technologies, draft patent applications and, working with external counsel, complete patent filings
Develop and implement IP processes and procedures for use within RUK business and support Global IP team for implementation of global policies
Draft IP provisions of contract templates as well as review and negotiate IP clauses in relevant contracts
Responsibility for identifying and exploiting commercially valuable IP
Drafting IP assignments and licences
Delivering IP training across the business
Review draft publications and presentations
Review of FOSS requests
Develop our technical IP Champions network
Work with Finance to establish the best method of generating revenue and obtaining tax relief from IP

Candidate Requirements:
Essential:
UK qualified solicitor/ patent attorney with 5+ years’ post qualified experience in private practice and/ or an in-house team
Subject matter expert in patent law or licensing with a good working knowledge of the other
Must be self-motivated, able to work autonomously, have a high sense of urgency, be able to problem solve complex situations and be analytical
Sound scientific and technical knowledge
Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels, both internally and externally, and build relationships and networks
Meticulous attention to detail
Ability to demonstrate successful strategy and business plan development and implementation
Ability to obtain and maintain a MoD security clearance
Numerate and proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
Travel will be required to all our sites (to include some international locations) to fulfil this role.

Desirable:
Training or experience in a technical field
Prior in-house experience at a technology and/ or engineering company
Interest in defence and aerospace industry182099
