The Paralegal role is a great opportunity for someone wishing to embark on their legal career. It offers a great grounding to understand how the theory of a legal degree / education can now turn into practical experience. Many of our Paralegals progress to the next career levels and hopefully end up as file handlers in their own right.

The role of Paralegal is to undertake a variety of administrative type tasks to support the members of the MOD (ministry of Defence) NIHL (Noise Induced Hearing Loss) Disease team in achieving Client KPI’s and SLA’s and help ensure cases are progressed efficiently with a favourable outcome.

Key Accountabilities

  • Update Case Management System with file allocations, diary records, as well as general activity, ensuring accurate recording of activity to allow progress tracking.

  • Liaising with Opponents and Witnesses to progress the case. Examples of tasks include requesting and providing updates; requests for extensions to comply with Protocol; dealing with GP, hospital, OH and Personnel mandates, reviewing Medical Reports and Records

  • Follow up on outstanding instructions, documents and other actions to ensure that responses are received within required timescales.

  • Maintenance of spreadsheets

  • Diarising and updating CRU

  • To ensure compliance with the SRA Code of Conduct 2011

  • Undertaking additional ad hoc duties to support the File Handlers and the team, as required

  • Undertake administration duties on files, such tasks may include completion of MI; drafting write off forms, requesting final bills and dealing with file closure/transfer activities.

  • Experience, Skills and Qualifications

  • Experience of working in a legal environment is desirable

  • Good communication skills and experience of negotiating with and influencing 3rd parties to obtain information

  • Excellent Organisation Skills

  • Demonstrable experience of;

  • o Following a semi-prescribed programme of work
    o Dealing with calls and enquiries from customers/third parties
    o Gathering and recording information
    o Ability to work under own initiative, prioritising and organising own workload
  • IT Literate;

  • o Proficient in MS Office (notably Excel, Word and Outlook)
    o Experience of using a Claims/Case Management system.
  • Proficient in the use of alpha numerical filing systems

  • GCSE grade A-C in Maths and English or equivalent
