Main purpose of role
Grosvenor Timberworks (GTW) is a start-up primary and secondary timber processing operation located in a 2021 built state of the art facility on the Eaton Estate, processing and adding value to Grosvenor’s rural estate sustainably grown timber. The purpose of the role is to lead all aspects of production and operations on the site, to develop and grow the business in accordance with the business plan and deliver the business objectives in a safe, sustainable, and profitable manner. Operations will span sawmilling and joinery, firewood and biomass and include developing product lines and opening new markets, including within Grosvenor’s property business.
Responsibilities
  • Health and Safety lead ensuring strict adherence to safe systems of work and fostering a strong health and safety culture on site.
  • Performance management of the team. Setting appropriate performance targets and monitoring performance against those targets. Developing talent within the team. Utilising all relevant company people management systems.
  • Delivery of the GTW business plan. Developing and implementing a clear roadmap of product and customer development.
  • Fostering a culture of continuous improvement, engaging the team in optimising performance and minimising waste.
  • Delivery of annual financial targets, principally profit for the business. Ensuring solid financial discipline, maximising value added and a relentless pursuit of value for money.
  • Own and manage site improvement plans e.g., new capital investments and technological upgrades.
  • Site hygiene – ensuring the site is kept clean and presentable to reflect and project to stakeholders the quality credentials of the GTW brand.
  • Stakeholder management ensuring clear consistent communication to all interested parties.
  • Managing with a strong interface the sales controller to ensure best in class customer service.
  • Development of new products to satisfy the needs of the market.
  • Short- and long-term production planning.
  • Managing rigorous quality control processes.
  • Develop and manage specifications for all manufactured products.
  • Ensuring delivery of customer orders on time and in full to the required specification.
  • Providing cover on production lines as appropriate and carrying out general site operational duties as required.
  • Design, own and improve all operational processes, systems, and controls.
  • Promoting GTW and liaising with other Eaton based Grosvenor businesses to optimise use of GTW timber on the estate, supporting sustainability and carbon targets and identifying additional areas of growth for the business.
  • Hosting promotional and community events to highlight the work of GTW.
  • With the support of colleagues in specialist functions ensure the site adheres to all regulatory and legal requirements.

  • To ensure Information Governance responsibilities are fulfilled, including:
  • Implementing the Information Governance acceptable use policy within their specific business area, and ensuring adherence to the policy and other information governance procedures by their employees
  • Delivering their responsibilities in relation to their assigned information assets
  • To ensure Health and Safety responsibilities are fulfilled, including:
  • Responsibility for personal safety and accountability for all staff reporting to this position, including others who may be affected by the organisation’s activities
  • To assume delegated authority to take aversive/proactive action where appropriate to prevent a potential situation escalating to an accident or health and safety failure
  • Ensure all employees and sub-contractors are suitably trained/competent to carry out the prescribed tasks and that the necessary licenses/certificates of competence are in force and appropriate. Ensuring that significant risks and relevant Grosvenor procedures are communicated
  • Plan enough time for work to be done in a healthy and safe way
  • Liaise with Health and Safety representatives for accident/ill-health investigations, carry out training needs analysis and arranging training, plan for and provide suitable and sufficient resources to meet policy requirements.
  • Co-operate with Health and Safety Representatives regarding reviewing and providing feedback on health & safety performance both positive and negative, implementing where required disciplinary procedures, carry out and implement risk assessments and controls.
  • To complete any other duties as required from time to time.
Experience, skills, and values
Qualifications:
  • Degree (or equivalent), industry expertise and CPD.
Experience:
  • Comfortable and competent at running operational teams and maintaining the highest standards of health and safety and legal and regulatory compliance.
  • Familiar with good manufacturing practice.

Additional information
  • Occasional weekend work may be required to support delivery of special orders or to meet production targets.
