We’re on the lookout for a Network Engineer to join our team working remotely but with on call travel to London sites.

What we can offer you;

What’s the purpose of the role?

The Network Engineers’ role is a technical role and is broken down into the following areas:
  • Responsibility for the ongoing support and operational function of the ISP network and associated services, providing a 3rd line support role for escalated support requests from our India-based NOC. This support extends to outside normal working hours via an on-call rota and may involve some anti-social hours. Technical leadership in major incident scenarios is expected.
  • The job holder will be tasked with identifying and implementing improvements to the RM Connectivity Services estate in order to improve service to our customers, increase operational and delivery efficiency and help grow the RM Connectivity Services business.
  • Development and implementation of ISP services in a project oriented environment. They will implement and follow formal development processes and introduce improvements to existing processes. The job holder will be expected to be able to work independently within their own projects with minimal technical input from peers. Team working is essential and the job holder will also need to operate under the guidance of technical architects or as part of a larger project team.
  • In order to perform maintenance activities, implement project-related infrastructure and respond to emergency incidents the job holder will be required to travel to RM Connectivity Services nationwide locations. A full UK driving license and flexibility to travel at potentially short notice is therefore essential. Opportunities for occasional travel to our RM India operation will also be available.
  • You will act as mentor and coach to more junior members of the team and facilitate a close working relationship across the UK and India Connectivity DevOps and NOC teams. You will provide technical training, share and embed best practice and processes and ensure these are adhered to.
  • The job holder will also need to understand the role that other teams from around the company play in delivering operational support and any project deliverables. Good people and communication skills are important in this role.
What does the job entail?
  • Technical development and maintenance of products and services to meet specifications and customer requirements. Write and review proposals, detailed designs, implementation plans and supporting documentation. Manage small to medium project implementation to completion. Train and onward brief supporting teams as needed.
  • Champion, identify and implement improvements to our day to day operational and control processes. This will include but not be limited to Incident & Problem Management, Change Management, Risk Management, Project Management, Knowledge Management and all processes supporting ISO27001 and any compliance requirements.
  • Provide 3rd line and proactive support and maintenance for all of RM Connectivity Services range of Internet products through application of practical knowledge.
  • Lead the technical response to major incidents.
  • Provide On-Call out of hours services on a shift rota basis to support all RM Connectivity Services Systems.
  • Liaise with internal stakeholders and external customers to gather requirements, write specifications and development plans and monitor progress.
  • Provide pre-sales advice and documentation to RM sales teams. Support Service Delivery/Account Managers with key account queries. Assist with content and development of solutions for strategic tender opportunities.
  • Research into emerging Internet and related technologies and techniques.
  • Mentor and coach more junior members of the DevOps team. Work closely with the India DevOps and NOC teams to share knowledge, improve processes and embed best practice.
What are we looking for?
  • 5+ years’ experience developing and operating ISP or large enterprise related infrastructure.
  • Experience of programming languages (ideally Python) and specifically developing for network automation (e.g. Netconf) and against vendor APIs.
  • Detailed technical and operational knowledge in the following; Connectivity products (DSL, Leased Lines, etc), WAN technologies and MPLS, Juniper/Cisco routers and switches, routing protocols including BGP and OSPF, firewalling and network security. JNCIP or CCNP certification or equivalent knowledge.
  • Technical knowledge and operational experience of the following: ISP Linux environments, server load balancing, web filtering, proxies, web hosting, SMTP and e-mail filtering, DNS
  • Knowledge of open-source monitoring tools such as Icinga, Grafana, Prometheus.
  • Excellent planning and organising skills to determine and manage project timescales and estimates.
  • Excellent communications & influencing skills. The ability to produce and present workshops and training sessions and the ability to influence RM Connectivity Services management and Technical Architects.
  • The ability to achieve results through effective delegation.
  • Good incident and problem troubleshooting skills, analytical skills and ability to collate and interpret data from multiple sources. Ability to assess and prioritise faults and respond or escalate appropriately
The Following Skills And Experience Are Also Desirable
  • JNCIA or CCNA Certification or equivalent experience
  • JNCIP-SP or CCNP Service Provider
  • Experience of ISP transit and peering implementations and management.
  • VMWare
  • SANs and storage technologies
  • Backup technologies including Veeam
