Would you like to play a key role in Mission Systems Design Change for the Hunt and T23 Class Vessels? We currently have vacancies for Mission Systems Senior Engineers at our site in Portsmouth Naval Base.

As a Mission Systems Senior Engineer, you will be supporting design change management for new capabilities and legacy equipment in terms of upgrades and modifications. You will be working in a team whose primary focus is design development and will be undertaking surveys, reporting and meeting/stakeholder correspondence to support the overall design integrity of the Class Specific Missions Systems engineering design, as part of the wider Warship Technical authority (WTA) that provides governance and oversight of engineering decisions that primarily effect Surface ship mission systems.

This role will provide you with the opportunity to work in a fast paced, high profile Maritime organisation. You will also have the opportunity to work on other classes and regularly on-board the vessels for surveys. Success in this role could also lead to extending your knowledge to other Mission Systems platform types and transverse engineering aspects across other platforms.

Your main responsibilities as a Mission Systems Senior Engineer will involve:

Ensuring the design intent and safety of the Mission Systems and to collate the assurance evidence of this for the individual Warship Approving Authorities (WAA’s)

Organising and co-ordinating aspects of Mission System engineering activity ensuring defined objectives are achieved whilst continually maintaining quality and service requirements

Responsible for assisting the provision of capability, as directed, to meet the needs of internal projects and customer programmes across the different Class Output Managements (COMs) as required

Internal/ external Stakeholder liaison in support of engineering change embodiment; Collaboration with UK Customers, partners and suppliers including Navy Command HQ, Surface Flotilla and MOD DE&S

Supporting technical investigation and requirements

Capability Insertion (CI) planning – supporting the planning process to facilitate CI roll-out planning, including First of Class embodiment targets

Provide visible active commitment to SHE, leading by example and acting on SHE concerns, mandatory training and keeping up to date

Essential

Your skills and qualifications:

Engineering knowledge and experience with the ability to apply it to complex engineering change process in the development of engineering impact assessment and in support of problem resolution

A working understanding of industry and MoD, Royal Navy design / safety management tools and processes

Experience and breadth of engineering knowledge – ability to apply it to a wide range of engineering issues within the Mission Systems area and understanding of other engineering disciplines

Understanding of engineering and project governance processes

Some understanding of Mission Systems, immediate COM (Class Output Management) and wider business goals

Understanding of, or experience in, a number of the technical areas listed below:
  • Naval Command Systems.
  • Real-time Combat Systems.
  • Standalone and Integrated Weapon Systems.
  • Coalition, Mission, Planning and Office Information Systems.
  • Conventional and Satellite External & Internal Comms Systems
  • Aircraft Maintenance (for T23) and Mission Support systems.
  • Safety, including being able to provide demonstrable experience of taking responsibility for safety decisions using sound safety management processes/tools
  • Physical integration into a ‘systems of systems’, understand impacts on wider systems and how they affect the overall capability and performance on the Navigation, Air Traffic Management and Operation capability of the vessel
  • Fibre Optic and Network infrastructures.
Desirable

Understanding of transverse engineering disciplines such as Environment, Human factors, Materials, Signatures, Vulnerability, physical security and TEMPEST, RADHAZ, Electro Environmental Effect, EMP & Electrostatic Discharge.

Type 23 and/ or Hunt class experience

Mission Systems experience

Be a member of a relevant professional body or working towards being a registered Chartered Engineer (CEng)

Strong communicator with the ability to articulate and communicate complex technical issues with diplomacy to both internal and external stakeholders of all levels. You will also have the ability to interact with and influence customers, stakeholders, suppliers and partner organisations. Having an understanding and empathy of the MoD/Military ethos will also be beneficial to this role.

Location: Portsmouth Naval Base – with occasional travel to Devonport or Abbeywood
