The Microbiology Department at the Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to work at our Specimen Reception in our friendly Laboratory team. The Specimen Reception area is a busy pre-analytical sample receipt and processing section within the main Microbiology Laboratory handling around 300 patient specimens each day.As a Biomedical Support Worker you will be an integral part of the laboratory team ideally with previous experience in a pathology lab or a high throughput environment, however full training will be provided to undertake this demanding but rewarding role.The successful candidate will work weekends and Bank Holidays on a rotational basis.Main duties of the jobBiomedical Support Workers (BSWs) contribute to the diagnosis and treatment of patients by supporting and enabling the Biomedical Scientists to perform a range of diagnostic techniques in order to assist clinical staff in patient care.   • Work in a safe manner and in accordance with trust Health and Safety Policies.2. Follow all policies and procedures, seeking advice where appropriate from senior staff.3. Provision of printed test results and general enquires service via telephone.4. Use of the laboratory computer including accurate inputting of test request information into the Pathology computer system.5. Participation in any staff rotations operating within the Directorate.6. To provide guidance and training to members of staff as appropriate.7. Safe receipt and handling of laboratory specimens.8. Verification of appropriate sample types and matching of samples with request forms.9. Bar coding and distribution of samples to appropriate laboratory staff.10. To operate a laboratory centrifuge for pre-testing sample preparation11. To undertake simple laboratory duties under the supervision of Biomedical Scientists.12. Any information gained by virtue of employment, including any confidential/personal information concerning patients or staff, must not be divulged to other staff not directly involved.

  • Good written and verbal skills
  • Basic English & maths (GCSE or equivalent)
Desirable
  • Qualification in IT/Keyboard (NVQ 3 level)
  • Health and Safety Qualification
  • Customer Service Qualification
  • IBMS Certificate of Competence part 1
Experience Essential
  • Previous experience of working in a high throughput environment
Desirable
  • Previous office / hospital /GP/ administrative experience
  • Broad knowledge of medical terminology
