This is a unique opportunity for General Practitioners to participate in the national implementation and development of a new Medical Examiner (ME) service. Medical Examiners scrutinise all deaths that are not under investigation by a coroner.Hereford implemented a Medical Examiner system in its acute hospitals in 2019. This has proved successful and popular with staff and relatives alike. In June 2021 NHS England issued an instruction to roll out a similar system to cover deaths in all settings. NHS England, following ministerial recommendation, have written to all NHS organisations to prepare for the statutory ME system to commence from April 2023. Funding has been identified, enabling the creation of additional posts, which will cover a weekly session for 42 weeks. With the new involvement of primary care in the system we are keen to recruit enthusiastic General Practitioners to join the current team of medical examiners, who have so far been recruited only from hospital consultants.General Information About Medical Examiner Training And The Nature Of The Job Is Available From The Royal College Of Pathologists Athttps://www.rcpath.org/profession/medical-examiners/medical-examiner-training.html.The statutory communication is availableNHS England Statutory medical examiner systemMain duties of the jobTaking information from the attending doctors, the medical records and from the family of the deceased they advise on death certification and referral (or not) to the Coroner.
