The role of the apprentice will be a varied and rewarding position where you will gain many new skills and knowledge whilst completing the apprenticeship. A great deal of mechanical work is also involved within this role and could be as simple as replacing a burst braided hose on a hydraulic pack to welding a shaft for further service life.

You will be guided and supervised throughout your apprenticeship by time served skilled engineers, we will ensure you have a practical hands-on experience that will help you understand the practical & theory required to become a future multiskilled engineer at Cromwell Plastics.

Your duties will include:

  • Basic fixed wiring duties will be part of the role for installation work of new equipment
  • Fault finding on electrical control circuits and fixed wiring, 3 phase & single phase
  • DC control panels following schematic drawing
  • All electrical building services e.g., air conditioning, lighting & sockets
  • Mechanical fault finding of extrusion, winding & printing machines
  • Recycling plant along with converting machines
  • Being a team player is a key role within maintenance role and having the ability to interact with all levels of staff
  • Report and address any Health & Safety issues within in the Engineering Department in accordance with the Company’s Health & Safety Policy, Regulations and Procedures
  • Ensure that the correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is worn for the task being undertaken
  • Ensure the Company’s Quality Control Procedures relating to the Engineering Department are followed in accordance with the companies’ procedures
  • Maintain good housekeeping standards across the Engineering Department
  • Complete relevant paperwork accurately and record any findings on the maintenance log
  • Attend all college courses and complete all external coursework required to complete the apprenticeship on time
  • Attend training that is relevant to your role to aid development and progression
  • Troubleshoot and liaise with other departments as required to help fault find and resolve problems
  • Assist with the maintenance needs in the Engineering department ensuring the plant, machinery equipment and buildings are in safe working order and always running efficiently
  • Assist with all preventative planned maintenance and servicing to minimise production downtime
  • Conduct all safety critical checks on site in accordance with relevant legislation
  • Assist with calibrations on relevant equipment in accordance with legislation

Desired qualifications

An apprenticeship allows you to earn a wage, gain valuable work experience and industry specific competence. You will be expected to work towards a Level 3 Manufacturing operations engineering Technician, with support from your employer and Chesterfield College.

As part of your apprenticeship and dependent on your prior attainment you may be required to complete maths and English Functional Skills (dependent upon your GCSE grades) which is an integral part of your apprenticeship. Upon successful completion you will be awarded an additional certificates of recognition for these qualifications.
