Job Summary

The Maintenance Mechanic will be based at our Luton site supporting our Civil and Defence business lines whilst reporting to the Facilities & Maintenance Manager, the incumbent will be required to participate in the maintenance on call rota in this full time role. The Maintenance Mechanic will solve Mechanical Maintenance issues including repairs without supervision and to a safe standard.

Established in 1993, GKN Aerospace in Luton is a world leader in commercial and military ice protection systems and transparencies. Offering a full range of capabilities; design, analysis, testing, certification and manufacture of electro-thermal ice protection, military fast jet canopies and flight deck windows to over 20 programmes including: Boeing 787, Dreamliner, Airbus A320, AgustaWestland, AW101, Eurofighter Typhoon and Lockheed, Martin F-22 Raptor. Our customers include Boeing, Airbus, Lockheed Martin, Bell Helicopters, Textron, BAE Systems, Pratt & Whitney, Leonardo. Our Luton site is home to 400+ employees and onsite facilities including onsite parking, canteen, vending machines and showers.

Job Responsibilities
  • Conduct minor and assist with major planned preventative (PPM) work including checking, testing and information gathering
  • Carry out individual technical administration by the completion of works dockets
  • Work in confined spaces adnd at heights using engineering and building tools
  • Follow the WED/Engineering procedures with respect to safety, security and fire policies
  • Work flexibly and take on new responsibilities with enthusiasm
  • Manufacture, assemble, erect and install new and replacement work
  • Conduct mechanical maintenance works or repairs unsupervised
  • Monitor performance and efficiency of LPHW boilers and associated elements
  • Monitor performance and efficiency of AHU (air handling unit), air conditioning and refrigeration equipment
  • Carry out mechanical maintenance to Hot and Cold Water Systems and slurry treatment plant and accessories
  • Perform maintenance and repairs attending to blockages to waste/sewage and rainwater drainage systems
  • Understand the relationship of other craftsmen’s work enabling work flexibility within the team
  • Carry out periodical servicing, checking and testing of plant and services in accordance with Planned Preventative Maintenance System (PPM)
  • Instruct and advise others on aspects of mechanical maintenance work as required
  • Undertake new techniques with suitable training as necessary
  • Carry out individual technical administration including the completion of works tickets and the filling in of log books in departments
  • Carry out the duties of the On Call Maintenance Craftsman
Profile Description

How You’ll Contribute

Essential

To help us make a difference, youll bring your passion and talent for what you do along with the following skills, experience, qualifications and attributes:
  • Mechanical NVQ, City & Guilds parts 1-2-3 or equivalent
  • Significant experience gained from a Mechanical Maintenance role
  • Experience of fault finding on motors and gearboxes
  • Experience of adhering to work place H&S policies and procedures
  • Experience of PPM (Planned Preventative Maintenance)
Desirable
  • A relevant HNC/HND such as Mechanical Maintenance/Engineering
  • IPAF training
  • Ladder training
  • Experience gained from a manufacturing environment
  • Fabrication or welding experience
  • Experience of mentoring or coaching more junior team members
