Maintenance Inspector (Electrical)

About the role

The Estates Services performs an effective maintenance service that provides a safe environment for students, staff and visitors within the University. Contributing to Cardiff University aim to be world class by keeping the University Buildings and infrastructure in a safe and usable condition that allows for their efficient utilisation and overall effectiveness.

The Maintenance Inspector - Electrical is part of a team that supports the ongoing management and coordination of day-to-day Maintenance Operations of a discrete multi-disciplinary team to achieve a high standard of performance within Estates and Campus Facilities.

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • A Degree/NVQ 4 or equivalent Professional membership/experience and demonstrable experience within a Maintenance Inspector or similar position within an Electrical Engineering Maintenance environment.
  • The ability to communicate conceptually detailed and complex information effectively and professionally with a wide range of people along with effective time management and organisational skills, including the ability to work effectively under pressure
Evidence of demonstrable knowledge of key advances within specialist discipline along with good knowledge of HV &LV power distribution, generators and backup power systems.
  • Evidence of ability to undertake and deliver specific projects and supervise short term project teams, with demonstrable experience in effective contract management, particularly KPI Management.
  • Sound business acumen and a track record of delivering value-add impact
  • Demonstrates a collaborative team spirit focused on service delivery.

This is a full time (35 hours per week), open ended contract.

Salary: £36,333 - £43,155 per annum (Grade 6)

Job Description

Job Purpose

Support the University within specialism of Electrical Engineering (HV and LV), carrying out supporting work, providing advice, guidance and support, and leading maintenance operations / delivery and associated projects within this area

Key Duties

  • Provide professional advice and guidance on Electrical Engineering ((HV and LV) including but not limited to the oversight, planning and delivery of maintenance operations for Estates department managed and maintained electrical services throughout the University
  • The appointed person will be the deputy authorised and deputy responsible person for such items and their associated processes and procedures to internal and external customers that will have institution wide impacts, using judgement and creativity to suggest the most appropriate course of action where appropriate, and ensuring complex and conceptual issues are understood.
  • Take responsibility for resolving issues independently within Estates Electrical Engineering matters where they fall within set role objectives
  • Investigate and analyse specific issues within Electrical Engineering matters on behalf of the Estates Department for the whole University Campus, creating recommendation reports, supported by advances within Electrical Engineering
  • Ensure that the provision of Estates Electrical Engineering is delivered to the institution in accordance with the Estates Electrical Safety Policy, Statutory, Regulatory and Good Industry Practice requirements, proactively changing the delivery according to customer requirements
  • Establish working relationships with key contacts, developing appropriate communication links with the University’s Schools/Directorates and outside bodies as required
  • Create specific working groups from colleagues across the University to achieve Estates Department and University Campus wide objectives
  • Plan and deliver specific small-scale projects, co-ordinating and supervising project teams created as needed
  • Develop and deliver training within Electrical Engineering
  • Undertake a variety of administrative duties to support the department
  • Instruct and guide other employees across the University within Electrical Engineering
  • Perform other duties occasionally which are not included above, but which will be consistent with the role

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

1. Degree/NVQ 4 or equivalent Professional membership/experience and demonstrable experience within a Maintenance Inspector or similar position within an Electrical Engineering Maintenance environment.
2. Substantial experience of working within specialist discipline to include being competent to operate specialist technical “engineering” software (eg: Amtech), Computer Aided Design (eg: AutoCAD), BEMS GUI, controller interfaces (Doorway, Trend, IQ Vision, G50, LiGo, Synapsis, etc) and configuration software for detailed fault finding.
3. Able to demonstrate professional knowledge within specialist discipline to give advice and guidance to internal and external customers
4. Ability to communicate conceptually detailed and complex information effectively and professionally with a wide range of people along with effective time management and organisational skills, including the ability to work effectively under pressure
5. Evidence of ability to explore customers’ needs and adapt the service accordingly to ensure a quality service is delivered and a proven ability to develop networks in order to contribute to long term developments
6. Evidence of ability to solve expansive problems using initiative and creativity; identify and propose both practical and innovative solutions
7. Evidence of demonstrable knowledge of key advances within specialist discipline along with good knowledge of HV &LV power distribution, generators and backup power systems.
8. Evidence of ability to undertake and deliver specific projects and supervise short term project teams, with demonstrable experience in effective contract management, particularly KPI Management.

Desirable Criteria

9. A Postgraduate/Professional qualification
10. Experience of working with a Honeywell Trend Building Energy Management System.
11. Experience of working in a Higher Education environment
12. Fluency in Welsh, written and oral
