Base: Glangwili General Hospital and Prince Philip Hospital, Carmarthenshire

Applications are invited for a locum General Anaesthetist to work 10 sessions per week within the Glangwili General and Prince Philip General Hospitals in Carmarthenshire.

The post is immediately available for a fixed term up to 31/3/2023, and there is an on-going active recruitment programme in place.

The successful applicant will be supported by a compliment of 22 Anaesthetic Consultants who are responsible for the provision of an Anaesthetics service to the population of the Carmarthenshire area within the Hywel Dda University Health Board.

The department covers Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen and Prince Phillip Hospital in Llanelli comprising of two vibrant NHS District General Hospitals.

Main duties of the job

Glangwili Hospital has 403 Inpatient beds, providing acute surgical and medical services to the area. It also provides all consultant led obstetric care and paediatric services for the south of the region and all ENT surgery for the Health Board.

Prince Phillip Hospital has 218 inpatient beds and provides acute medical services and elective surgery, including Orthopaedics, Breast Surgery, Urology, Colorectal and General Surgery.

Prince Philip will shortly provide an expanded day surgery service with a new build comprising of two operating theatres. This will increase the day case capacity in Carmarthenshire and support an increase in inpatient flow through Prince Philip.

There is currently a 1:10 consultant on call rota in place with the intention of expanding to 1:11 following this appointment. The cover for theatres at both hospitals includes the surgical, trauma, obstetric and paediatric emergencies, although no out of hours surgery is normally undertaken at Prince Philip Hospital.

This post does not have a Critical Care component.

As a senior employee of the Health Board the post holder will work in close co-operation with, and support other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Health Board’s patients. You will provide leadership, develop teaching, supporting and training multidisciplinary teams, participate in CPD as well as developing and delivering a comprehensive service in Anaesthetics

Qualifications
  • Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practise
  • FRCA or equivalent
  • Batchelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree
Desirable
  • Appropriate Higher Degree e.g. MD, PhD or MSc or equivalent
  • On Specialist Register with GMC or CCT due ) within 6 months of interview date Or CESR or equivalent European Qualifications for Specialist Registration
Essential

Clinical Experience
  • Broad based experience in Anaesthesia Ability to anaesthetise children
Desirable
  • Experience of working in the NHS in Wales
  • Higher or Advanced training in DGH work
  • Ability to anaesthetise children >1 year old for routine procedures
  • An interest in obstetric medicine
Clinical Governance and Research

Essential
  • Understanding clinical governance and quality improvement principles
