It is a really exciting time to join the Reach family!

Due to our sustained growth and our ambitious future growth plans, we are now looking for a Live News Editor to cover live and trending news across Gloucestershire and Somerset as part of our network of live brands.

You will be directing Reporters on the breaking and trending stories that will achieve the highest possible audience numbers as well as writing stories yourself.

  • This role exists to find and report on the stories and issues which matter to our readers in a way which ensures as many people as possible discover and respond to our work, helping us to have a positive impact on the local communities we serve.
  • This role focuses on breaking news and is fast-paced, reactive, responding to local and national news events in a way that will connect with our readers.
  • You will be equally comfortable with anchoring a murder investigation live blog as you will directing reporters about the latest Covid-19 rules in Tesco as well as what our local celebrities are up to.
  • The role will be focussed on responding to what works for our audiences in Somerset and Gloucestershire and the stories that drive engagement among our readers.

This is a flexible working position as you will be home-based. Shift work will be part of the role. You will largely beanchoring breaking and trending news due to the large nature of the patch.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor breaking news channels constantly for developing news stories affecting Somerset and Gloucestershire
  • Work closely with the Reach Wire/Tendendo team, responding to national news angles that affect local audiences
  • Direct Reporters and desk and publish content, ensuring publishing, legal and Ipso standards are adhered to
  • Work closely with local Content Editors and communicate effectively
  • Build communities online and in real life to share stories with once published, and engaged with readers about those stories
  • Tell stories in many different ways, including (but not limited to) real-time live blogs, article format, video, audio and pictures
  • Act up or cover in other roles as and when required by the business
  • Uphold Reach’s policy around diversity and inclusion and work to ensure our values around non discrimination are upheld in everything we publish.
The Ideal Candidate
  • Qualified Senior Journalist, ideally with newsdesk experience
  • Digital publishing skills - working a CMS, shooting video, taking pictures. A proven track record for digital storytelling.
  • Accomplished live blogger
  • A great understanding of SEO/social media - and the content that works for each
  • Social media skills - following on social media, track record of building communities on social media
  • Passion for digital storytelling in local journalism
  • A great understanding of digital audience trends and analytics
  • A valid UK driving licence
