At Arriva UK Trains (AUKT) a fantastic, permanent opportunity for a commercially minded lawyer to advise and assist a broad range of internal business units across the AUKT division has become available. This role will be responsible for delivering clear, effective, and pragmatic legal support to our Train colleagues and senior business leaders across AUKT. The role will be responsible for the provision of end-to-end commercial advice and contractual documentation to support the AUKT operating companies and functions.

Reporting to the Head of Legal, AUKT. This is a flexibly based full time permanent role.

Commercial legal experience, with a track record of delivering pragmatic and timely advice to non-lawyers and business leaders

Ability to work hand-in-hand with finance and procurement colleagues on major contracts and projects to ensure that we can move quickly from first engagement to contract sign-off

Confidence and ability to work independently, while making decisions based on legal and commercial risks and priorities and to provide pragmatic and innovative solutions to complex issues

The gravitas to carry the confidence of the UK Train senior executives who he/she will be dealing with / advising; and to have the confidence to challenge them where he / she feels the wrong approach is being adopted

Management of external legal firms including negotiating and monitoring the scope of engagement and costs whilst maintaining and building on existing working relationships and acting as the interface between external legal firms and the commercial teams in Arriva

An active advocate of good corporate governance and an understanding of directors’ duties

Reasonable level of post qualification experience in company and commercial matters (minimum PQE 4 years)

Swift, effective, and satisfactory resolution of legal issues

Ability to influence and negotiate at all levels in the organisation

Acute self-awareness and a positive and proactive attitude and solutions orientated

Strong analytical, organisational and communication skills

Ability to manage a demanding workload according to competing business priorities
