Job Purpose

To carry out research and scholarship in the areas of area of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (e.g. in Microelectronics, Power Engineering, Engineering Design, Digital Design, Embedded systems and other relevant fields) are encouraged to apply.

To deliver an excellent student experience through teaching and assessment as well as contribute to management and administration. At Grade 7 to 9, demonstrate leadership and contribute to academic and strategic management of the Joint Educational Institute [JEI] and the success of the Joint Educational Programme [JEP].

For consideration at Reader level:

To provide strategic leadership and operational management oversight of academic and any other activities associated with the University of Glasgow Partnership with UESTC, promote coordination between colleagues in Glasgow and China, and develop research activity and external relations within China and East Asia.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Perform the following range of activities

Develop, lead and sustain personal and group research aligned appropriately to JEP / JEI research strategy.

Enhance your research profile, reputation and esteem through;

  • Establishing and sustaining a track record of independent and joint publications of international quality in high quality refereed journals, generating research impact in terms of economic/societal benefit;

  • Presentation at international and national conferences and at internal/external seminars, colloquia and workshops;

  • Identification of potential funding sources and the development of proposals to secure funding from internal/external bodies to support future research;

  • Developing and maintaining collaborations with colleagues across the School/College/University and external Academic and Industrial Partners;

  • Contribution to team/group meetings/seminars/workshops and activities to enhance the wider knowledge, outputs and culture of the School/College.

Contribute to the planning, organisation and delivery of high quality teaching, supervision and assessment activities across under/postgraduate programmes within the Subject/School.

Contribute to the ongoing development and design of under/postgraduate curricula, to ensure a research led approach to student learning and assessment in the discipline and/or profession.

Manage a variety of academic administrative activities, including timely delivery of effective and constructive feedback on assessment, and provision of pastoral support.

Contribute to the management and organisational duties of the School, as assigned by the Head of School.

Engage in personal, professional and career development.

Contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan Inspiring People - World Changers Together.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

For appointment at Grade 7:

Essential:

A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 [PhD] or equivalent in related discipline with a growing reputation for scholarship within the subject area.

A2 A developing national / international reputation, evidenced by esteem indicators, in a field that matches or enhances existing activities within the JEP / JEI.

For appointment at Grade 9/Reader:

A3 An extensive and established reputation in research and/or teaching within the subject area to develop new knowledge and understanding within the field.

For appointment at Grade 9/Reader:

A5 An extensive and established reputation in research and/or teaching within an existing area in the JEP / JEI as evidenced by esteem indicators.

Desirable:

B1 Knowledge of the higher education environment in China and East Asia.

For appointment at Grade 7:

Essential:

C1 Ability, drive and influence to develop an nternational research profile.

C2 Research creativity and strong cross discipline collaborative ability as appropriate.

Experience

For appointment at Grade 7:

Essential:

E1 Sufficient depth of relevant research experience including postdoctoral experience, appropriate to an early career researcher.

E2 Evidence of a emerging track record of presentations and publications.

E3 Experience in undertaking independent research and contributing to successful funding applications.

E4 Excellent track record of development and delivery of teaching , tutoring or demonstrating at undergraduate or postgraduate level.

For appointment to Grade8/9/Reader the following criterial should also be met:

For appointment at grade 8:

E5 Demonstrate enhanced leadership, academic responsibility and strategic management, particularly through internationally leading research, outputs and funding.

E6 Strong track record of undertaking research, publishing in high impact journals at national and international level, and in attracting external research funding.

E7 Excellent track record of contribution to academic and administration activities in a research led institution.

For appointment at Grade 9:

E8 In addition, demonstrate a distinctive contribution to the academic community through a leading role nationally and internationally eg shaping research agendas, advising review panels and funders.

For appointment at Grade 9/Reader:

E9 Evidence the above criteria to a higher degree, particularly in generation of research, outputs, funding, supervision, and knowledge exchange/impact.

For appointment at Reader:

E10 Excel significantly in generation of research, outputs, funding, supervision, and knowledge exchange/impact.

Further Information

Three positions are available.

People with prior experience in research and teaching in the area of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (e.g. in Microelectronics, Power Engineering, Engineering Design, Digital Design, Embedded systems and other relevant fields) are encouraged to apply.

This post is based at the main campus of the University of Glasgow, but it is a requirement that the appointee will travel regularly to the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China [UESTC] in Chengdu, PR China. It is expected that the appointee will travel to UESTC around 8-10 times per annum for visits typically of 9 to14 days duration, but longer or more frequent visits may be required to meet operational demands.

Standard Terms & Conditions

The salary will be on the Research and Teaching Grade, level 7/8/9, £36,382-£40,927 / £44,706-£51,799 / £53,348 -£60,22 per annum.

This post(s) is full time (35 hours per week) and is offered on an open-ended basis.

The successful applicant of this post will be enrolled onto the University’s Early Career Development Programme (ECDP). This will provide you as an early career academic staff member to be developed and supported over a specified timeframe to facilitate the advancement of your academic career.

New entrants to the University will be required to serve a probationary period of 6 months.
